Dear Campus Community Members,

The safety of our students and campus community members is paramount to the University so when information on this incident was received and developed the University acted quickly to deal with the situation.  The student involved is no longer at the University.  Any other information about the investigation will come from the law enforcement agencies involved.

It’s that simple (to stop thefts from vehicles)

February 17, 2009

We’re seeing a pretty significant number of vehicles being broken into, mostly out in the neighborhood. The common factor in these thefts is the visible presence of “incentives”: cash, CD’s, Ipods, purses, wallets, checkbooks, backpacks, laptops.

Remember, most “vehicle prowlers” will check your vehicle for these incentives first, then break in – not the other way around. If you want to reduce your chance of having your car broken into, remove the incentive. Take enticing items with you if you can. At least conceal them (for example, put them in your trunk) if you can’t.

It’s that simple.

Robbery suspects arrested

February 7, 2009

From today’s Spokesman Review:

Two people were arrested Friday night in connection with a rash of robberies that prompted extra security measures at Spokane payday loan centers and pharmacies.

Spokane police will release the suspects’ names after search warrants have been served, said Lt. Dave McGovern.

The two were arrested about 6:30 p.m. and are believed to be responsible for at least seven robberies and one attempted robbery since January, including the payday loan center robberies and the OxyContin heist at ShopKo Tuesday night, McGovern said.

The alleged crime spree began with robberies at the Northwest Food Mart at 5611 N. Driscoll St. on Jan. 8 and Jan. 11, police said Friday.

The Check and Go, 6411 N. Division St., was robbed Jan. 14, followed by robberies at Check into Cash at 555 E. Francis Ave. on Jan. 20 and Jan. 29.

The Check into Cash at 920 N. Division St. was also hit Jan. 29, and an attempted robbery occurred there Tuesday.

Tuesday’s attempted robbery occurred less than an hour before a major OxyContin robbery at the ShopKo pharmacy, 9520 N. Newport Highway. In each loan center robbery and the ShopKo robbery, the suspect wore a black ski mask and light blue jeans and carried a handgun.

McGovern couldn’t say if just one of the men arrested Friday, or both, is suspected of being the gunman. “We’re trying to figure that all out, too,” he said.

The rash of robberies led to extra pharmacy patrols by the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office. Check into Cash stores also started locking their doors during business hours and asking for identification to enter the store.

7:15 PM

Employees at the Tilford Building reported seeing a suspicious subject enter the building. GU Security responded and searched the building while GU Dispatch monitored video cameras in the building. A search yielded no suspicious individuals.

7:55 PM

Employees at the Tilford Building reported that they had seen a suspicious subject in the Tilford Building. SPD responded, a canine unit searched the building, and nothing was found. A review of video from the Tilford Center cameras showed only one subject, believed to be a Plant Services employee,  in the building other than the employees. An investigation is pending.

Take Back the Neighborhood Is Back

February 4, 2009

Take Back the Neighborhood is finally coming back after a month!!!

> (Sorry about that, by the way).

>    First, our first event is going to be this Sunday at 3:00 pm in the

> Madonna basement.  We will be baking and decorating cookies for the

> Ronald McDonald House.  (Because of the snow, it may be a little hard

> to clean up the streets).  We will also be making Valentine’s Day

> decorations to decorate Ronald McDonald.  For those who do not know,

> Ronald McDonald is a home for families who have children in long term

> stay over at the hospital.  They stay at the home so that they can be

> close to their children.

>    Second, I wanted to take a brief moment and explain the new general

> direction of Take Back the Neighborhood… the ModoC Block Resident

> Life Staff will be fully adopting this program and providing two

> service events per month to continue to attempt to better our

> surrounding community and the Gonzaga community.  Many of these events

> will include street clean-up, but there will also be other service

> opportunities (such as the cookie baking program).  If anyone has any

> questions, feel free to ask me.

>    Finally, thank you so much to everyone for your hard work and

ZagAlert Update

February 3, 2009

Gonzaga’s new Emergency Notification System, ZagAlert, will be used to notify you in case of a significant emergency or dangerous situation occurring on campus involving an immediate threat to health or safety.

ZagAlert is now an opt-out system. If you are an ON-CAMPUS student or employee, you will be automatically asked to review and update your ZagAlert information approximately every six months when you log into ZagWeb.

When you log in to ZagWeb and are asked to update your information, you will be presented with three different options:

·         ZagAlert Contact Information – This link will enable you to confirm and update your contact information. After updating and/or confirming your information, click on the “Submit” button at the bottom of the form. You will not be asked to update your information again for approximately six months.

·         Remind Me Later – This link will enable you to bypass the update form if you need immediate access to ZagWeb. You will be asked to update your information again at a later date.

·         Opt-Out – This link will remove you from the ZagAlert system. After clicking the link you will be asked for your ZagWeb pin in order to confirm that you have elected to opt out of ZagAlert. You will not receive any ZagAlert emergency notifications or system tests. You will not be asked to update your information again for approximately six months.

Once you sign up, you may opt out or change your settings at any point by logging into ZagWeb and clicking on the “ZagAlert” link on the main menu. To change your settings, click on the “Options” button at the bottom of the form.

If you do not have a University ID or your pin number has expired, please call the Registrar’s Office at (509) 313-6592.

We will be doing a system-wide test every semester, beginning early in 2009. We do this to make sure there are no snags in the system.

We hope we never have to implement our ZagAlert system, but we hope it gives you some peace of mind knowing that we have such a system in place.

If you have questions or concerns, please call the ITS Support Center at (509) 313-5550.
