TRAFFIC CONSIDERATIONS FOR MOVE-IN DAY AT GONZAGA

August 24, 2015

Welcome to Gonzaga! Friday, August 28th 2015 is the first day freshman can move into residence halls. Four major changes in traffic flow on the university campus will allow easy access for unloading and parking:
• Cincinnati Street from the Centennial trail to Desmet Avenue will only be a northbound, one-way street.
• Desmet Avenue from Cincinnati to Hamilton Street will only be an eastbound, one-way street to allow egress for departing vehicles. To access Cincinnati Street, you must turn west onto Spokane Falls Boulevard from Hamilton Street and then turn north onto Cincinnati Street.
• The intersection of Dakota Street and Boone Avenue, Dakota Street from alley south of Sharp Avenue to Boone Avenue, and Boone Avenue from Dakota Street and Cincinnati Street are ONLY pedestrian areas – no vehicles allowed.
• Desmet Avenue from Dakota Street to Cincinnati Street will be only an eastbound, one-way street to allow egress for departing vehicles from Welch Hall.
In order to reduce the wait time for students to unload their belongings; we recommend that after you have completed unloading your vehicle, you park your vehicle in the parking garage which is located at Desmet Avenue and Cincinnati Street, any Gonzaga-owned parking lot, or street parking; and then finish moving into your respective residence hall.
To ease any confusion on how to arrive to your respective residence hall, please follow these directions:
Coughlin Hall/Catherine-Monica/Madonna:
Turn north onto Cincinnati Street (one street west of Hamilton Street) from Spokane Falls Boulevard and continue north to the Centennial Trail where a uniformed staff member shall direct you to your respective residence hall for parking. Coughlin Hall is the first residence hall on your right, Catherine-Monica is the second on your right, and Madonna is the third on the right.
Welch Hall:
If you are arriving from Sharp Avenue – turn south onto Cincinnati Street, continue to the alley just south of Boone Avenue where a sign and a uniformed staff member shall direct you to a parking space.
If you are arriving from Hamilton Street – turn west onto Boone Avenue, continue to Cincinnati Street, turn left onto Cincinnati Street, and then turn right into the alley just south of Boone Avenue where a sign and a uniformed staff member shall direct you to a parking space.

Twohy Hall:
Twohy Hall is located on the corner of Boone Avenue (one street south of Sharp Avenue) and Cincinnati Street. You may park anywhere possible to unload.
Roncalli/Lincoln:
Roncalli and Lincoln are located on the north side of Boone Avenue between Cincinnati and Dakota Street (two streets west of Hamilton Street, six streets from Ruby). To park and unload , you may either turn south onto Cincinnati Street, then turn right into the alley just south of Sharp Avenue; or turn south onto Dakota, then turn left into the alley.
Dillon/Goller/Alliance:
Dillon and Goller Halls are located between Standard (three streets west of Hamilton, and five streets east of Ruby) and Dakota just south of Sharp Avenue. Alliance is located across the parking lot from Goller Hall. To park and unload, you may either turn south onto Standard, then turn left into the alley; or turn south onto Dakota, then turn right into the alley.
Crimont Hall:
Crimont is located on the west side of Standard Street just north of Sharp Avenue. There is parking in the alley, or you may park on the street.
Desmet Hall:
Turn south onto Standard from Sharp Avenue and continue south where a uniformed staff member shall direct you to a parking space.

Thank you for your patience, and welcome to Gonzaga University.

Hamilton and Sharp closed briefly while Emergency Responders cleaned up gas spill

March 25, 2015

SPOKANE, Wash. – The Spokane Fire Department is investigating a gasoline spill that happened near North Hamilton Street and East Sharp Avenue early Wednesday morning.

Authorities responded shortly after 7:00 a.m. to reports of a gas leak. Upon arrival they were able to confirm the leak was from a vehicle, and not the pump.

According to authorities, a man attempted to steal gas from an Spokane Transit Authority vehicle, unknowingly clipped a fill line, and that led to approximately 10 gallons of fuel spilling onto the street.

Hamilton St. was closed briefly, but authorities re-opened the street shortly after 8:00 a.m.

Spring Break security tips for off-campus residents

March 5, 2015

Houses

Let trusted neighbors or friends know you are leaving and ask them to keep an eye on your house.

Leave exterior lights on. Lock all gates, doors and windows. Close all curtains.

If you would like your home checked while you are away on break, the Spokane Police Department Senior Volunteers offer this service. Services are provided Monday through Friday for up to 30 days. All doors and windows are physically checked including any out-buildings on your property. Call the Vacation Home Check Information line at (509)622-5885 if you are interested in having this service provided to you.

Vehicles

If you live off-campus, you may want to park your car on campus over spring break. The City of Spokane only allows parking on the street for up to twelve hours at a time. Consider utilizing the free parking program offered by Campus Public Safety and Security. No permit is required but you must sign up at the CPS&S office located in lower Welch hall. Parking is limited and is on a first-come first-served basis. Campus Security is not responsible for any damage or theft to vehicles if you choose to utilize this program. Remember to lock your vehicle and remove all valuables that may attract unwanted attention.

Mail & Packages

If you will be gone more than two to three days, make arrangements to have your newspaper and mail deliveries stopped or picked up by a trusted neighbor or friend.

Whether you live on campus or off, you may rent a mailbox from the Gonzaga Mail Room for $35.00 per school year. Right now they are offering mailbox rentals for $15.00 for the rest of the school year. If you live on or off-campus and you have a mailbox through Gonzaga, you can have packages delivered to the secure mail room.

The United States Parcel Service offers the following service if you will be away from your off-campus residence for any period of time: https://holdmail.usps.com/duns/HoldMail.jsp

Golf on Campus

February 27, 2015

There has been an increase in students playing golf with tennis balls around campus. This has become an issue because damage is being done to the grass all over campus and we want to make sure our campus is as beautiful as it can be. This damage to the grass is causing a significant amount of work for the grounds crew. This activity also has the potential for injury to others. The university needs this activity to stop immediately. If you are found playing, you will be asked to stop. You will also have the potential of going through the conduct process. Thank you for your support in caring for our campus and those in it.

Beware of Door to Door Alarm Sales

July 14, 2010
Spokane City Police News Release from July 14th 2010
Citizens living in the City of Spokane need to be aware of door to door alarm sales. For the past few years, several out-of-state companies have brought a college-aged sales force into our local community to perform aggressive door to door sales of their residential alarm systems.

Spokane Police Department is suggesting that prior to signing any paperwork with an alarm company, they should ask about the Spokane City False Alarm Reduction Program. Every reputable alarm company will know that you must register your alarm system with the City of Spokane to be eligible for police response.

Beware of sales tactics that misrepresent themselves from the homeowner’s current alarm company. They may claim there is a problem with your current system and they are there to fix it. Police suggest a citizen contact their current alarm company before changing the current system.

Some salespersons may require the homeowner to sign a new monitoring contract; charging higher fees made payable to a different company than your current one.

Police encourage consumers to always double check with the Better Business Bureau if you have questions BEFORE agreeing to purchase an alarm system or sign a monitoring contract. This has been a nationwide phenomenon and there have been thousands of consumer fraud complaints.

Remember – a legitimate alarm company will come to your home only after making an appointment and will seldom ever show up at the door without your knowledge. If in doubt, call the current alarm company to confirm the identity of someone representing them. You have the right to ask a person to leave your home or premises and if they continue with their sales efforts after you have asked them to leave, notify the police.

Police recommend conducting a google search of “summer alarm sales complaints” or similar wording to find names of problem companies.

Spokane Police News Release-Cell phone law

June 9, 2010
Cell Phone & Texting Laws Become a Primary Offense Tomorrow
The Spokane Police Department wants to remind drivers that the laws regarding texting and cell phone use while driving change tomorrow.  As of June 10, 2010, Washington’s new cell phone law is in effect—with strict police enforcement. If police see you holding a phone to your ear or texting while driving, they can pull you over. Tickets are $124 and could be more if your distracted driving causes a collision.

It is important to remember that studies show even using a hands-free device does not reduce the level of distraction you have while talking on your phone.  The best advice is still to pull over to a safe place if you need to talk to someone on your phone.
