{"id":407,"date":"2009-12-05T15:41:35","date_gmt":"2009-12-05T23:41:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.gonzaga.edu\/campo\/?p=407"},"modified":"2009-12-04T18:07:54","modified_gmt":"2009-12-05T02:07:54","slug":"holiday-savvy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/blogs.gonzaga.edu\/campo\/2009\/12\/05\/holiday-savvy\/","title":{"rendered":"Holiday Savvy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Here are a few simple tips from the Spokane Police\u00a0to consider during the holidays:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Park Smart<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Park and walk in well-lit, busy areas<\/li>\n<li>Stay away from over-grown bushes and trees<\/li>\n<li>Use valet parking or an attended garage if you are alone<\/li>\n<li>Shop at locations that have police and\/or security patrols<!--more--><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Never display or &#8220;flash&#8221; your cash or valuable personal items<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Don&#8217;t leave valuables (cell phones, electronics, GPS devices, jewelry, etc.) in the car&#8230;if necessary, put them in the trunk<\/li>\n<li>Don&#8217;t wear expensive jewelry while shopping or keep it at a minimum<\/li>\n<li>Keep the amount of cash you carry to a minimum&#8230;use credit\/debit cards instead<\/li>\n<li>Carry cash in an unusual place instead of your purse or wallet<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>While walking through parking and public areas<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Pay attention to your surroundings, people, and vehicles in the area<\/li>\n<li>Do not approach situations that do not feel safe; trust your instincts!<\/li>\n<li>Walk with confidence<\/li>\n<li>Do not overload yourself with packages<\/li>\n<li>Carry your purse close to your body\u00a0or your wallet in your front pocket<\/li>\n<li>Do not be distracted by talking on the phone or wearing headphones<\/li>\n<li>Help others by reporting suspicious people to the police or security staff<\/li>\n<li>Ask security to escort you if you feel uneasy<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>When you reach your car<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Have your keys in your hand and alarm panic button ready to activate<\/li>\n<li>Look into the vehicle and check for intruders before entering<\/li>\n<li>Continuously scan the area while loading children and packages<\/li>\n<li>Teach children to safely enter and exit the vehicle in an expedient manner<\/li>\n<li>Roll up the windows and lock your doors as soon as you get in the car<\/li>\n<li>Make it a habit to always start your vehicle and drive away immediately<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>If approached by a suspicious person<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Be aware of strangers approaching for any reason<\/li>\n<li>Do not be afraid to tell subjects to back off, scream for help, activate your car alarm, or use a self defense product<\/li>\n<li>If you suspect you are being followed, switch directions and immediately go to a well-lit area crowded with people<\/li>\n<li>If someone in a vehicle asks for directions, ignore them or answer from a distance &#8211; do not approach the vehicle<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>If you become the victim of a crime<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>If approached by a subject with a weapon, do not argue or resist; give up the car and any valuables they ask for (your life is worth more!)<\/li>\n<li>Call the police immediately to report the crime and provide detailed information; your actions can help prevent someone else from becoming a victim<\/li>\n<li>Keep records of credit card numbers and contact information in an easily accessible place and immediately report them if lost or stolen; the quicker you report them, the less damage a suspect can do<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&#8220;Most crimes are crimes of opportunity, so by following these valuable tips, you can help keep yourself from becoming a victim,&#8221; Sgt.
