Why Employers want to Meet YOU

Getting Ready for Thanksgiving Dinner

Thanksgiving-703525

Ahh… Thanksgiving dinner.  A banquet table of food set where friends and family gear up for the feast.  Typically in preparation for the big annual event, some people will actually limit the pre-Thanksgiving meals as a way to preparing for the dinner.  Or wear their favorite (and comfy) sweatpants for extra room.  Don’t giggle, you know it’s true!

Now, this is when I am going to suggest a whole new idea in getting ready for turkey dinner with Aunt Mildred and Grandpa Fred.  When they turn to you with the probable question of, “What are you doing after graduation?” Instead of getting sheepish and asking for more mashed potatoes, what if you had a confident and smart reply?

For example, your response can be, “Well, I am planning on attending a program Gonzaga sponsors called the Trek which brings GU students and leaders in top companies in Seattle & Portland together.  I’ll get an edge on job/internship hunting, networking all while learning about corporate culture.”  (Your reply doesn’t have to be exactly like this, but it gives you the right idea…)

For talking points with family and friends, ten facts of the Treks that will impress everyone!

  1. Portland is in it’s 8th year and Seattle is in it’s 10th.
  2. Majority of the excursions are hosted by fellow ZAGS.  Who better to tell you recruiting secrets than a zag?
  3. In tough economies, networking is the key that opens the door.  Treks help you get started at top companies.
  4. Corporate excursions are exclusively for Gonzaga students only. (We get requests from Ducks, Beavers, Huskies and Cougars but the answer is always no.)
  5. Learning how to conduct research on companies is a critical job hunting skill.
  6. The Women’s Symposium in Seattle brings together top female leaders with current students to give insight towards career development.
  7. Need to polish your networking skills?  This is your chance to deliever your elevator pitch.
  8. Curious what a corporate culture is really like? Check out what it’s like to work Nordstrom, Starbucks, Nike, adidas and MORE.
  9. Keynote speakers in both cities are the best of the best.
  10. Good food and good networking with alumni and friends of Gonzaga.  What more do you need?

Today is the day.

dannycg-jump-green-sun-raysYour resume is perfect.  Your elevator pitch is polished.  You are ready to shine and today is the day to prove it.  The Career Center wants to invite you (yes…you!) to our Business & Liberal Arts Career Fair TODAY from 1-5 pm in Jepson.  34 companies have registered and are planning on attending to meet you! There are companies from all over the Pacific Northwest recruiting for both internships and full-time opportunities.  In this economy meeting HR recruiters is a valuable use of your time.

So put that Wii down, jump into the shower and pull out your iron.  (You want to look your best right?)   If you need some last minute coaching on your elevator pitch, networking or even another glance on your resume we have on hand “Resume Doctors” waiting for you at the fair!

No excuses.  Today is the day.

Speed Dating, Nope..Speed Interviews!

speed dateIt can only take a few minutes for two people to click. During speed dating, prospective partners hop from one table to another hoping to find that spark. Yes, it’s terrifying, nerve-racking, and more than a little exciting. What can be even more emotional is not sitting across from a potential first date, but across from someone that will critique your experience, evaluate your character, and decide whether are not you are right for their company. No need to prematurely wave a white flag.

Come to the Career Center’s Speed Mock Interviews tonight at 7pm and get some practice sitting and talking with someone that could change your career as opposed to your lonely Saturday nights.

Make sure to RSVP at careercenter@gonzaga.edu or stop by 2nd Floor of Crosby!

Plan to Rock the Trek…

Yes, I am still in the rainy (but beautiful) Emerald City of Seattle working with employers in finalizing the details of the 2010 Treks.

Before I announce the newest participant, I have to share a little “fun” fact about myself: I love Michael Jackson music.  I do.   His music is always fun to dance to and no matter what “mood” I am in, I always get cheered up.  That is why I was left speechless when I actually got to see his glove in person.  Where, you might be wondering did I spot this piece of Pop Culture history?  At our newest excursion host: The Experience Music Project.

This excursion will include a tour of the museum along with Q&A from panelists answering what it really looks like to work for a non-profit.  All majors are encouraged, especially HR, Public Relations, Marketing, Education as the EMP has internships within those fields.  Not in those fields of study?  That’s okay, EMP would also be happy to meet with an interest in non-profit, event planning or development.

Registartion begins this Friday!  Stay tuned for more details.

Note: Corporate excursions are  made available exclusively for Gonzaga students (both undergraduate and graduate levels).  Alumni and friends of the university are encouraged to attend the networking social as well as the Career Fair.  More information to come.

Touchdown for the Trek!

qwestfield3

Avoiding raindrops here in Seattle, I am continuing to meet with potential excursion hosts for the 2010 Seattle Trek.  Although  the title of this blog post may lead you to believe that I am referring to the NFL team in town,  think again. We have just secured an excursion with Turner Construction, who built the beautiful athletic complex.

This tour will be paired with PACCAR, which will lend well to the overall theme of Engineering.  Turner Construction would specifically like to meet Civil Engineering majors.  So, for all those engineering students make sure to mark your calendars and plan to register for the PACCAR/Turner Excursion!  Registration begins this Friday, with link to be announced on Thursday.

Note: Corporate excursions are  made available exclusively for Gonzaga students (both undergraduate and graduate levels).  Alumni and friends of the university are encouraged to attend the networking social as well as the Career Fair.  More information to come.
