Emily— From a Startalk Student to a Startalk Teacher Assistant
July 29, 2013 by cheng
Emily worked for Gonzaga Startalk Chinese program this summer as a teacher assistant. She worked very hard and handled young kids very well.
Emily has four younger sisters, two of whom were adopted from China in 2011. That’s why she was so excited when she heard Gonzaga was offering Chinese to local high school students during the summer time through federal government funds. She applied and was accepted. Emily really enjoyed her experience and decided to continue. After the summer Chinese program, Emily enrolled in Gonzaga dual enrollment program as soon as she was eligible. She learned Chinese for two years at Gonzaga’s regular Chinese program before she graduated from high school in May this summer. Then she joined Gonzaga Startalk again not as a student but as a teacher assistant. Emily said she learned a lot and had a lot of fun helping teach the kids.
Right now Emily is in China doing volunteering work and of course using her Chinese. She said she is able to communicate with the Chinese kids there about 70 % of the time. That’s amazing! She is now teaching English and also frist and second grade level Chinese Chinese to a couple of kids. Wish her a very pleasant stay in China!
Emily plans to study aboard in China next fall. What a great impact Startalk has brought to her life!
