Take a seat. You are going to be here on Gonzaga’s mountaintop for the next four years.
I reach across my desk and throw on my sunglasses. They will have to stand in for my grandpa’s thick spectacles because, try as I may, I’m going to have to pull the grandpa card here.
You will laugh a lot, cry occasionally, and be thankful daily for this wonderful place you will soon begin to call home.
The more time you spend engaging both on campus, and in the greater Spokane community, the more memories you’ll make and the more your education will be worth to you.
You will not only learn values that you will maintain through the rest of your life, but you’ll become wiser, you’ll grow into yourself, and you’ll be able to pass on what you learn here to everyone that you encounter.
The answer for me is simple: the return on investment, in the form of the richness of the rewards of a Jesuit education, makes the investment worthwhile.
As I sit back typing these last few words, I can’t help but think of the incredible adventure you are about to embark on – and I wish you could see my smile.
Gonzaga sits within the ancestral homelands of the Spokane Tribe of Indians and these lands are part of the Columbia Plateau, which has been home to Native American peoples for thousands of years.
