We are in the midst of many exciting transitions here at Gonzaga. Just a stroll across campus reveals the swift work of fall making its way through the trees, and the crisp air against our cheeks reminds us that indeed, the 2013-14 school year is well underway. As we embrace this new season, we also find ourselves approaching a valuable check-in opportunity: the midpoint of fall semester. This is an important moment that allows students to take stock of their academic efforts, to reflect on their progress, and to remember that while much has happened in these first few weeks, much is still to come, and maintaining this perspective is key.

There are several factors to consider as grades are released, and it is encouraged that students keep in mind the following when assessing their midterm progress:

  • Grades are variable: the significance of this midterm grade depends on how assignments and tests are weighted on a professor’s syllabus and will not necessarily forecast the final semester grade.
  • Take stock: consider the number of grading opportunities that have occurred in a course up to this point. What assignments have been completed and what still lies ahead?
  • Opportunity for dialogue: questions often come up at midterms about coursework, expectations, and grading outcomes. Remember that open communication with professors, advisors, and fellow students is one of the best strategies for learning and improving academic performance.

All students will receive midterm reports from their academic advisors during a scheduled meeting. Students are encouraged to sign up for these meetings via email or a sign-up sheet posted outside the advisor’s door. This meeting will be an opportunity for advisors and advisees to discuss the student’s progress thus far and additionally, to begin constructing a schedule for spring semester. This midpoint in the semester also marks the time when first year students will self-register on ZagWeb for spring semester. There are many important topics to explore during this check-in point of the semester, and students are encouraged to allow this moment to be a time for reflection, and a chance to plan for the weeks and months ahead.

We’re thrilled to welcome our students back into the halls and pathways of Gonzaga, and we wish you a warm and wondrous fall season!

As a parent of a student who is fortunate to attend a university like GU, I am writing to say that your key points are very well stated. It is imperative for both parent and student to be on track; to communicate what is happening in one another’s lives, in our individual worlds, to stay in touch and supportive of what lies ahead, and that our mutual goals. for one another are just that, supportive and united.
Thank you GONZAGA FOR BEING TRUE TO YOUR GOALS, ASPIRATIONS, AND MAINTAINING A LOVING, SUPPORTIVE ENVIRONMENT FOR ALL, FOR SO MANY YEARS! An admirable goal, and outstanding tradition! Your consistency, support, and inspiration is never ending. and amazing.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart for all that you do as individuals, teams, university, community to inspire us near and far.

Paula A. Tilghman, A very proud parent of a GU student who has excelled because of being in community with GU.
