What is the CGE and what do we do?

The Center for Global Engagement (CGE) encompasses 4 sub-offices: International Student & Scholar Services, the English Language Center, Study Abroad, and Gonzaga in Florence. Our commitment to the Gonzaga mission is embodied in the support and academic excellence provided to our students and scholars in the process of consistently becoming more globally engaged citizens.

Housing Tips for Domestic/International Roommates:

When living with a roommate from another country/culture, there is so much to be gained. Of course living with someone new can bring on challenges no matter where they are from. Here are some things to think about:

How to begin?

  • Ask questions about family, friends, goals, culture, and interests
  • Ask about their sleeping patterns, visitors, study habits. Establish
  • Avoid stereotypes (assuming your roommate will act, dress, or speak in a certain way because of their background
  • Be open. Tell your roommate if you need time alone rather than ignoring them.

Things to keep in mind:

  • You might be the first American/International individual this person has spent a lot of time with. Embrace this opportunity!
  • Cultural differences are opportunities for growth.
  • Not every conflict will be due to cultural difference. Look at individual behavior and personality and ask questions to solve problems.
