Washington State Secretary of State’s Office Fall 2013 Internship

The Secretary of State’s Office is looking for qualified undergraduate and graduate interns for the upcoming fall 2013 semester.  The  expansion of the internship program is a goal of the Secretary of State’s Office and they hope to transform the current program into a year round program that includes summer, fall and session internship opportunities.  The current internship is unpaid, but they will work to ensure college credit.

Executive Internship – Fall 2013

September – December 2013

The Washington State Secretary of State’s Office is seeking qualified undergraduate and graduate students for an unpaid internship to assist the Secretary of State’s Policy and Communications team. The Office of Secretary of State includes the Elections Division, Washington State Library, Washington State Archives, and Corporations and Charities Division. The intern’s primary responsibility will be assisting the Communications and Policy team in the executive office, but may also include participation in projects and research for other divisions within the Secretary of State’s Office.

Place of Employment and Duties

  • The internship lasts from September to December 2013, depending on the student’s academic schedule. The intern will work in the executive office of the Secretary of State in the Capitol Building and have access to a computer and other equipment to complete assigned tasks. The standard work day is 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday with some flexibility contingent upon class times and credit requirements.
  • The intern will support the policy team with research, assemble daily media stories from the internet to distribute via e-mail, write for the office blog From Our Corner, assist with the development of the Secretary of State’s media outreach program and other duties as assigned.
  • The Director of Policy and Communications and the Internship Coordinator will provide assignments, direction and guidance. The Intern Coordinator will work with the intern’s school to ensure that all academic requisites have been completed in order for the intern to earn college credit.

Pre-requisites and Application Process

Prospective interns must be completing or have completed a degree in the field of Political Science, Public Administration, Public Policy, Communication, Journalism, Pre-law or other applicable field.  The ideal candidate must be able to demonstrate research and writing abilities, have an understanding of the governmental process and the ability to perform basic word processing tasks.

Closing date for consideration will be July, 31st.  Interviews will then be conducted in person or over the phone.  The selected candidate will begin work in early or late September, 2013, depending on the academic schedule.
