Serves as the recruiting representative for the University at high schools and community colleges.  Describes academic programs, student life, and admission requirements to prospective students and high school counselors.  Responsible for geographic territories, and therefore is responsible for all high schools and students in the area.  Point person for recruiting efforts of students underrepresented in higher education, and Office of Admission liaison to diversity initiatives at Gonzaga.


Travel and Special Events (33%):

  • Represents the University at high school visits, college fairs and other events, advising prospective students and high school and college personnel regarding admission policies and procedures.
  • While traveling, Admission Counselors will utilize independent judgment and are expected to act as agents of the University by contributing to the mission of the University at all times.
  • Involved in on and off campus special events such as open houses, college fairs, Gonzaga Experience Live weekends, summer send-offs, etc.
  • Counselors travel approximately three (3) months of each year, but the times are concentrated in September, October, November, March and April, with small trips in the outlying months.  When traveling, counselors visit between 3 and 5 high schools a day (depending on distance between schools), attend evening fairs, do interviews with high school students, and in the spring, host receptions for accepted students.

Prospective Student Review (33%):

  • Admission Counselors independently read and evaluate student applications until the whole pool of applications are reviewed.  Collectively, Admission Counselors are responsible for the entire applicant pool, and each one must review approximately 600-700 applications per academic year.  During late November – December, late January through early March, this task takes up 80-85% of work time.
  • Uses independent judgment to effectively analyze applications of prospective students for admissibility.
  • Interviews candidates for admission, providing information about admission procedures, academic programs, and degree requirements.
  • Maintains liaison with secondary school counselors, prospective students and their parents.
  • Responsible for extensive email and phone follow-up with prospective students.

Project Management (33%):

  • Each counselor is responsible for at least one major project to manage entirely, with supervision.  Projects include, but are not limited to, managing GEL Weekend, managing scholarship competitions, managing the Admitted Student Questionnaire, coordinating and executing the Ignatian Leaders Scholarship competition, coordinating Honors admissions, coordinating student-to-student outreach, coordinating faculty-to-student outreach, and publications.  Counselors must be able to handle marketing (if applicable), plan their project deadlines, manage budget restrictions, and execute the project.
  • Performs other duties as assigned in support of the Gonzaga mission.  Other duties as assigned may include taking on a short-term project like assisting with a survey or a new marketing piece, or assisting the Associate, Director or Dean in areas where work must be completed towards the larger goal of finishing application reading.


  • Assists, as needed, the Assistant Deans of Admission, Associate, Director and Dean of Admission in specific assignments.
  • Participates in the overall planning and strategic marketing efforts of the Admissions department.


May direct the work of admissions support personnel and/or work study students.  Administrative and functional supervision received from Director and/or Associate.


Most duties are performed sitting, but also involve moderate walking and occasional standing, bending, kneeling, stooping, carrying and lifting up to 30 pounds.  Performs a substantial amount of computer keyboard work requiring extensive wrist and hand movements.  The traveling portion of this position requires the ability to travel, via car, air, and foot, and the flexibility to accommodate travel as part of the job requirements. Ability to be mobile campus wide for various business needs.


  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • 3 years of work experience, which may include extensive volunteer or internship work
  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills
  • Excellent writing, public speaking, and communication skills
  • Demonstrated professionalism when communicating and collaborating with diverse groups of people
  • A valid driver’s license
  • Ability and willingness to work some evenings and weekends
  • Ability and willingness to travel
  • Bilingual in Spanish


  • Graduate of Gonzaga University highly preferred
  • Experience working with high school and/or college students
  • Interest in working with groups under-represented in higher education
  • Familiarity with Gonzaga University in terms of its goals, mission, etc.
