SPOKANE, Wash. — This past weekend, Gonzaga University Mock Trial Teams 1076, 1077, and 1078 competed in the University of Oregon’s Third Annual David Frohnmayer Elite Mock Trial Invitational in Eugene, Oregon. Fourteen prestigious teams of approximately 112 students in all went head-to-head over four intense power-matched back-to-back rounds over the two-day period.
GU Team 1076 faced Cal Berkeley (0-1-Tie), University of Oregon (0-2), University of Portland (2-0), and Chemeketa Community College (2-0). GU Team 1077 battled Oregon State University (2-0), another University of Oregon team (2-0), a third University of Oregon team (1-1), and the fourth University of Oregon team (1-1). GU Team 1078 dueled Reed College (0-2), Chemeketa Community College (1-1), Oregon State University (0-2), and University of Portland (1-1).
Cal Berkeley captured the tournament championship with a 6-1-1 record. GU Team 1077 landed in second place with a record of 6-2. GU Team 1077’s Katie Haas and Brittney Murray each scored a coveted All American Witness Award, and GU Team 1076’s Sharon Maher picked up an elite All American Attorney Award.
GU Team 1076 consists of Emily Klein, Sarah Kohan, Shane Looker, Sharon Maher, Sammy Ollmann, and Kailey Silverstein. GU Team 1077 includes Ian Cobb, Shelby Damron, Katie Haas, Brittney Murray, Siri Wheeler, and Kurt Wohlers. GU Team 1078 is composed of Larissa Caldeira, Mai Contino, Emma Kilroy, Ryan Liam, Micaela Meadows, Joe Parry, Margarett Qaqish, and Elli Williams.
GU Mock Trial is coached by Dr. Georgie Ann Weatherby, GU Professor of Sociology & Criminal Justice, Daisy Tran, GU Mock Trial and GU Law Alum with Safeco Insurance (Personal Injury Division), Dan Wu, GU Law Alum in Spokane private practice, and Dr. Vik Gumbhir, GU Associate Professor of Sociology & Criminal Justice.
Dr. Weatherby says of the team, “We are headliners wherever we appear. Gonzaga’s teams demonstrated a deluge of talent throughout the duration of this first competition of the season. And there is plenty more to follow.”
