The Communication Studies Department hosts Dr. Ralina Joseph, Associate Professor of Communication at University of Washington and Director of the Center for Communication, Difference, and Equity for her talk, “Screening Strategic Ambiguity: Reading Black Female Resistance to the Postracial Lie.” The event, which is free and open to public is Wednesday, March 22 at 7:00 pm in Jepson Center’s Wolff Auditorium.
Dr. Ralina Joseph studies contemporary representations of race, gender, and sexuality in the media. In her presentation. Dr. Joseph will speak about her book, Screening Strategic Ambiguity: Reading Black Female Resistance to the Postracial Lie (New York University Press, forthcoming), which looks at how African American women celebrities like Tyra Banks and Oprah Winfrey, cultural producers, and audiences challenge and resist post-racial discourse—the media-propagated notion that race and race-based discrimination are over.
Her first book, Transcending Blackness: From the New Millennium Mulatta to the Exceptional Multiracial (Duke University Press, 2012), critiques anti-Black racism in mixed-race African American representations in the decade leading up to Obama’s 2008 election. Dr. Joseph has published work in Critical Studies in Media Communication; Communication, Culture, and Critique; The Black Scholar; SOULS: A Critical Journal of Black Politics, Culture, and Society; and more.
