When you meet anyone who is, in any way, associated with Gonzaga, they say the “community” is what makes it so special. Pat Reese has been working at Gonzaga for 15 years, most recently in the role of Associate Director of Development. Here are her reflections on “community” at Gonzaga:
“I hear the word so often in my work with alumni, parents and friends of GU. I think that everyone longs to be a part of something bigger. And we are intended to help others, particularly those who are in the greatest need. Maybe that is what community is. It certainly is the essence of philanthropy.
“My family matters most to me, and that includes dear lifelong friends and my Gonzaga family. Our mission remains central and prominent. More and more bright and talented young men and women want to attend Gonzaga. Those who are financially needy should not experience hardship. For all students, we must commit to relevant and challenging learning that prepares graduates to solve problems, responding to opportunities facing our world. I am inspired to be a part of and give back to the Gonzaga community because I believe that whatever effort I can make, may brighten someone else’s day, ease someone else’s challenge, even in a small way.
“When I hear about the importance of the GU community, I think it evokes a common language and a shared experience. In so many ways, it is hard to define, but everyone who passes through, or walks alongside us knows what it is: the GU community, the GU experience. This is a unique and special place. The work that we do, the way that we do it, to inspire faith-filled lives. Our community leaves great latitude for a person to live and serve in a way that is personal and passionate for them as an individual. When I hear about the Gonzaga community, what I most want to say to people is thank you. Because everyone plays a special part in why Gonzaga is so great. Thank you.”
