Xavier Collantes (’17) is a first-generation Filipino-American from Auburn, Wash. Having grown up with the perspectives of two different cultures, he had a unique understanding of the importance of community. Gonzaga was a top choice for him because of its tightly knit community and small class sizes. Based on his family’s position, money was the biggest factor in choosing where to go to college and Gonzaga offered Collantes a scholarship that made it possible for him to attend.
Inspired by his grandfather, who was the Dean of business at a prominent university in the Philippines, Collantes developed a passion for business, finance and computer science. The field of business appealed to him because commerce and trade can affect everyone everywhere and because finance can be seen in everyday life, having lasting effects on society. He looks forward to using the skills he acquires at Gonzaga to create better links between people around the world.
All of Collantes’ experiences at Gonzaga, inside the classroom and out, have all been possible thanks to his scholarship.
“Without my scholarship I would not be able to pursue my dreams of success,” said Collantes. “The gift I have received is worth more than any check anyone can write. It is the gift of a future that could not have happened otherwise. From the bottom of my heart I sincerely give my thanks.”
