Scholarships in Action

Dennis A. & Peggy M. Calfee Scholarship
2010-2011 Recipient:  Alexa Easterday

Alexa Easterday

Alexa Easterday, a sophomore from Basin City, Washington, is the second from her family to attend Gonzaga. Her sister, Shaelah, just graduated from the University last spring. Alexa attended Connell High School before becoming a Zag. “I took all of the AP courses offered and all of the science classes I could because I was really interested in science at the time.”

She still is interested in science. When she started out at Gonzaga she thought she wanted to earn her degree in biology. “But I recently switched to environmental studies and economics. My plan is to go to law school and pursue environmental economics or international justice issues.”

Not only is Alexa busy with her studies, she also is quite active outside of class, just as she was in high school when she was involved in tennis, cheerleading, the drill team, pep and jazz bands, Future Business Leaders of America, Future Farmers of America, National Honor Society, and community service projects.

At Gonzaga, she is involved in the Human Action Club, Science Club, International Justice Mission, ESL Partnering project, and worked on community service projects such as the Spokane River Clean Up, Second Harvest (food bank), and Spokane Neighborhood Clean Up.

What with her commitment to community service, it’s no wonder she chose to come to Gonzaga. “I applied to many great schools, but had always liked the atmosphere here at Gonzaga. I knew it would be a place where I would grow academically and spiritually. I also love the Jesuit emphasis on social justice. I love the feeling of belonging to a caring, compassionate student community, a group of people who want to go out into the world and change it for the better. I also love the faculty, the Jesuit influence, the campus, and the many activities and events that occur every week.”

After she earns her undergraduate degree, Alexa plans to take a year off to travel before pursuing her law degree. But for now, she’s having the time of her life as a Gonzaga student.

“It is such a wonderful opportunity to be here at Gonzaga, and I would love to thank the Calfees for supporting me; they have truly been a part of the fulfillment of my educational and personal dreams. I will continue to take full advantage of all that Gonzaga has to offer! It’s very inspiring to see people like the Calfees invest so generously in students’ futures.”
