October 8, 2010

October 7

A student reported that he secured his bike with a cable lock to a bike rack at Coughlin at 4PM on October 6 and found it missing at 3AM on October 7.

October 5

At about 12:30 AM on October 5, a shooting was reported near Mission Park, just east of campus. An argument between non-students evolved into one shooting the other in the legs. Police secured the area while they searched for the suspect.

A student reported that her longboard, a Sector 9 swallow tail with orange wheels, was taken from Mulligan Field during the Sausage Bowl football game.

A student reported that she secured her bike with a U-lock to a bike rack at Coughlin Hall on October 2 at 5:30 PM and found it, and the lock, missing on October 5 at 4PM.

October 3

A student reported that sometime between 6PM and 11:30PM on October 3, someone broke a window on her car and took an Ipod that was sitting in the center console. No other items were found missing.

Three students reported being pepper-sprayed and punched at about 1AM near Sinto and Columbus. The students reported they were walking through the neighborhood when they were assaulted by three or four females and two males who pulled up in a white sedan, got out and asked, “Where are the parties at?”. When the students answered that they didn’t know, they were pepper-sprayed and punched. The assailants then fled.  The students were not seriously injured. Spokane Police responded and completed a report.

October 1

At about 5AM a car alarm was activated in the Kennedy Apartments parking lot. Upon investigating, Gonzaga Security found a window on a student’s vehicle had been broken. No items were found missing.

September 29

A Gonzaga student reported that sometime after she locked her bike up at Marian Hall around 10PM on September 28 and when she went to get it at 1PM on September 29, it was stolen. She reported it was locked to the rail at the front of the hall using a cable lock.

SPD News Release: Subject Shot in the Area of Sharp Ave/Hamilton St

October 5, 2010

 Spokane Police are investigating a shooting that occurred in the area of Sharp Ave/Hamilton St.  A 19 year old male was shot in both legs during a verbal argument.  The victim of the shooting was stabilized at the scene and taken to a local area hospital for further treatment.

On October 5th, at 00:35 AM, Spokane Police responded to a shooting that just occurred in the area of Sharp Ave/Hamilton St.  Officers located a 19 year old who received a gun shot wound that went all the way through his right leg and entered and lodged in his left leg.  The victim and several witnesses stated an argument occurred between 4 subjects.  During the argument 1 of the suspects pulled out a handgun and shot the victim in the legs.  The  suspect and his companion fled the scene on foot in an unknown direction.  The armed suspect and his companion were both described as male Hispanics in their late teens or early 20’s.   

Spokane Police quickly set up a containment and a K9 search was conducted in the area.  The K9 was unable to locate the suspect or his companion.  The suspect and companion haven’t been arrested or identified as of yet.   The shooting investigation will be referred to the Spokane Police Detective Unit for further follow up and investigation.

Shooting Reported Near Mission Park

A shooting has been reported near Mission Park, and Spokane Police have set up a search perimeter that covers part of campus including Marian Hall and residences east and northeast of campus. Police are asking everyone to remain inside while they search for the suspect. Details are sketchy at this point, but the suspect is believed to be a white male in his 20’s with long blond hair, wearing a black jacket and hat. Reports indicate he fled to the north from Mission Park.


Off-Campus Assault Reported Near Sinto and Columbus

October 3, 2010

Three students reported being pepper-sprayed and punched at about 1:00 AM near Sinto and Columbus. The students reported they were walking through the neighborhood when they were assaulted by three or four females and two males who pulled up in a white sedan, got out and asked, “Where are the parties at?”. When the students answered that they didn’t know, they were pepper-sprayed and punched. The assailants then fled.  The students reported they had called 911 and returned to their residence on East Augusta. According to the students, they had all been checked out by Spokane Fire Department EMTs prior to calling Gonzaga Security and were not seriously injured. Spokane Police responded and completed a report.

Gonzaga community members are reminded of the following safety tips:

• If you have to walk, do so in groups especially after dark. Try to use well-lit, busy routes. Be aware of your surroundings.
• Utilize Saferide if you need a ride back to your residence from an off-campus location: call 568-8000.
• Utilize Security escorts to travel across campus: 313-2222.
• Report suspicious persons or circumstances immediately to GU Security (313-2222) or SPD (911).
• Once you are in safe place, report all crimes immediately to police at 911 and GU Security at 313-2222.

September 28

12:15

A GU Student reported the theft of his black Specialized mountain bike sometime between 1:30 AM and 8:00 AM this morning from the Chardin bike rack. The bike had been secured with a cable lock.

12:35 PM

GU Security observed a male subject acting suspiciously in the 900 block of East Sharp. The subject was white, about 25 years old, wearing no shirt and black jeans. When a security officer attempted to make contact, the subject fled. He was located and contacted a few minutes later in the 900 block of East Desmet. The subject stated he was “out walking”. Security identified the subject, trespassed him from the GU campus, and strongly encouraged him not to walk in the Logan neighborhood.  

12:52 PM

GU Security contacted a subject who was observed entering the attic of the garage of a private residence in the 700 block of East Boone. The subject immediately became agitated, and stated he was given permission to be there. Security noticed a pocket knife with an open blade near the subject, and placed him in restraints. After confirming with the property owner that the subject was not permitted to be on his property and had been previously trespassed, Spokane Police were called. The subject was arrested for trespassing.

September 26

11:25 AM

An attempted residential burglary was reported at a GU-owned house in the 700 block of East Sharp sometime between 5:00 PM on September 24 and 1:00 AM on September 25. Residents found evidence that someone had attempted to pry open the front door. No entry was made.

September 25

12:36 AM

GU Security responded to a report of a fight at a residence hall. Security contacted a male non-student who was visiting a resident in the hall. During an argument with the resident, the non-student reportedly struck another student and broke a fire extinguisher case. Spokane Police responded and arrested the non-student for malicious mischief. GU Security trespassed him from campus. No injuries were reported.

9:25 AM

GU students reported a residential burglary at their off-campus house in the 400 block of East Indiana sometime between 11:00 PM on September 24 and 3:00 AM on September 25. Laptops and a camera were taken. There was no sign of forced entry. Three residents were asleep upstairs during the burglary.

11:50 AM

A Gonzaga student reported a male subject trying to enter her off-campus residence in the 800 block of East Sinto using a crowbar. The subject ran when she yelled at him. The student was able to get a good description of the subject and his vehicle including a license plate, and Spokane Police arrested him a few minutes later for attempted burglary.

11:00 AM

A Gonzaga student reported her bike missing from the Cataldo bike rack. She had left it there on Saturday morning and found it missing Tuesday morning.

September 20

9:00 AM

A Gonzaga student reported his bike missing from the Burch Apartments bike rack. He had left it there on Tuesday night and found most of  it missing on Wednesday morning. All that remained was the front wheel, securely attached to the bike rack with a U-lock.

September 17

10:45 PM

Gonzaga students reported three female non-students threatening them in the 300 block of East Mission. The three fled when Gonzaga Security responded. Spokane Police later located and contacted the non-students. The Gonzaga students declined to press charges.

12:43 AM

A Gonzaga student reported her wheels taken from her bike sometime between September 11 and September 15 while it was secured at the Sharp Apartments bike rack.

11:12 AM

A Gonzaga student reported his bike missing from the Coughlin parking garage. He had left it there around midnight on September 17, and found it missing at 8:00 AM. It had been secured with a cable lock, which was found cut nearby.

GU Security contacted 2 suspicious subjects near the Madonna bike rack. One of the subjects had been previously trespassed from Gonzaga for bike theft. A pair of bolt cutters were found in his backpack, along with “shaved” keys often used in vehicle thefts. He was subsequently arrested for possession of burglary tools and trespassing.

A GU Student reported his bike was taken from a railing in the Coughlin parking garage sometime Friday morning. It had been secured with a cable lock.

A computer monitor was reported missing from the Wolff Auditorium at Jepson.

September 15

A GU Student reported his bike was taken from the front porch of his off-campus residence in the 700 block of East Mission sometime Sunday or Monday. It had been secured with a cable lock.

September 14

A GU Student reported her bike was taken from the bike rack at Dooley sometime Monday night or Tuesday morning. It had been secured with a cable lock.

A GU Student reported her bike was taken from the bike rack in the Coughlin parking garage between September 11 and September 14. It had been secured with a cable lock.


Campo nabs two suspected bike thieves in four days

September 17, 2010

Alert Gonzaga Security officers contacted subjects on Monday and Thursday this week when they were observed acting suspiciously near bike racks. In both incidents, subjects were carrying bolt cutters in a backpack, and were subsequently arrested for possession of burglary tools. All of the subjects were trespassed from the Gonzaga campus. Including the subjects caught by Spokane Police on September 5 (also carrying bolt cutters), this makes 3 separate sets of bike thieves caught and arrested in two weeks.

7:46 PM

GU Security contacted a male and female non-student acting suspiciously near the bike rack at Welch Hall. Upon questioning, the male produced a pair of bolt cutters from his backpack and admitted intending to steal bikes. The male was arrested for possession of burglary tools and an outstanding warrant for burglary. Both subjects were trespassed from campus.

6:08 PM

A GU Student reported that a white male in his early 30’s first approached to ask a question, then grabbed her laptop while she was using it in the backyard of her off-campus resident in the 400 block of East Mission. She pursued the subject, who decided to return her laptop to her before jumping into a waiting red compact sedan. The student filed a report with the Spokane Police Department.

11:01 AM

A GU Student reported the theft of his bike from the bike rack at Coughlin Hall sometime Saturday night or early Sunday morning. He reported that the bike had been secured with a U-lock.  

10:45 AM

A GU Student reported the theft of her bike from the bike rack at River Inn overnight. It had been secured with a cable lock.

10:30 AM

A GU Student reported the theft of her bike from her residence in the 900 block 0f East Desmet overnight. It had been secured with a cable lock.

8:37 PM

A GU Student reported the theft of her bike from the bike rack at Dooley sometime between Friday and Sunday. It had been secured with a cable lock.

5:57 PM

A GU Student reported the theft of his bike from the Sinto Apartments sometime Sunday afternoon. It had been secured with a cable lock.

September 11

11:58 PM

GU Security was assisting dispersing attendees of an off-campus party in the 700 block of East Sinto when a very intoxicated individual, believed to be a student, decided to display his pocketknife during an argument with another student. The student was quickly subdued by other students and the knife taken away by GU Security. Nobody was injured. A report was later filed with the Spokane Police Department and the incident is also under investigation by Gonzaga.

A GU Student reported the theft of his bike from the stairwell at Burch sometime between Wednesday and Friday. It had been secured with a cable lock.

A GU Student reported the theft of his bike from the Dussault Apartments sometime between Tuesday night and Wednesday morning. It had been secured with a cable lock.


Sexual Assault Reported

September 9, 2010

A GU Student reported she was inappropriately touched during last Friday’s Highlighter Dance at Cataldo Hall. The student reported that an unknown person groped her from behind while she was on the dance floor. Because she could not identify the person responsible, she did not contact Campus Security or Spokane Police at the time. She later reported the assault to a member of the Sexual Assault Resource Team (SART).

The Sexual Assault Response Team (SART) is a group of Gonzaga staff and faculty who volunteer their time serving as a support and resource person for students who report sexual misconduct including sexual assault.  SART First Responders provide a personal response for students reporting sexual misconduct as well as resources and guidance. A SART member is on call 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.  They can be reached by calling the University Switchboard at 328-4220 (ext. 0 from on campus). SART First Responders can help you talk through all of the resources available. You do not have to give your name if you do not want to.

If any community member has information regarding this assault, we encourage you to contact Campus Security or a member of the SART team at 313-2222. You can also file an anonymous report through GU Silent Witness.  Gonzaga University encourages all persons who experience crimes and suspicious incidents to make a report with the University or Spokane Police at the time the incident occurs.

A GU Student reported the theft of her bike from Coughlin Hall sometime between August 27 and September 6. The bike was secured with a U-Lock.

September 6

A GU Student reported the theft of his bike from the Boone Apartments sometime between 9:00 PM on September 3 and 11:00 PM on September 4. The bike was secured with a U-Lock.

September 5

At 12:28 AM on September 5, a Spokane Police Officer contracted by Gonzaga observed two male subjects on campus acting suspiciously. The subjects ran when she attempted to contact them, dropping a backpack which was later found to include bolt cutters and other burglary tools. Both subjects were later found and arrested for possession of burglary tools. One of the subjects was taken to jail on a felony warrant.  Both subjects were also identified as suspects in an earlier bike theft caught on video at Martin Centre.

September 4

A GU Staff member reported the theft of his bike from Martin Centre sometime between Noon and 12:30 PM on September 4 . The bike was not secured.

A GU Student reported that her vehicle was broken into between 10:00 PM on September 3 and 1:00 AM on September 4 while parked in the 400 block of East Mission. A handbag containing identification, credit cards, and cash was taken.

September 3

A GU Student reported the theft of his bike from Coughlin Hall sometime between 6:00 PM on September 2 and 4:00 PM on September 3. The bike had been secured with a U-Lock.

A GU Student reported his bike taken from the bike rack at Jepson Center sometime between 8:00 AM and 8:50 AM on September 3. The bike was secured with a cable lock. 

 A GU student reported his bike missing from the area in which he hid it near Chardin between 6:15 PM and 9:30 PM on September 1. The bike was not secured.

A GU Student reported the theft of parts from her bike between 7:20 PM and 11:30 PM on September 2.

September 1

A GU Student reported the theft of stereo equipment from his vehicle while it was parked in the 900 block of East Sinto between noon on August 31 and 8:45 AM on September 1.

A GU Student reported that a GPS unit was taken from his vehicle while parked in the alley south of the 600 block of East Indiana between 8:00 PM and 10:30 PM on August 30. There was no sign of forced entry.

A GU Student reported the theft of his bike from the Herak bike rack sometime between 11:00 Am and noon on August 31. The bike was not secured.

August 30

A GU Student reported his bike was taken from the bike rack at River Inn sometime between 11:00 PM on August 29 and 4 PM on August 30. The bike was secured with a chain.

A GU Student reported her bike was taken from the bike rack at Twohy sometime between August 29 at 1:00 PM and August 30 at 3:00 PM. The cable lock securing the bike to the rack had been cut.

A GU Student reported his bike taken from the bike rack on the north side of Martin Centre sometime between 5:15 PM and 6:30 PM on August 29. The cable lock securing the bike to the rack had been cut.

August 25

A GU Student reported his bike taken from the bike rack under Coughlin Hall sometime between 4 PM on August 22 and 10:00 AM on August 24.  The cable lock securing the bike to the rack had been cut.

August 24

Three male students were assaulted at about 1:40 AM in the 900 block of East Mission. The students reported that four males believed to be non-students assaulted them in the Safeway parking lot, punching and kicking them.  The students were able to get away and call Spokane Police and Campus Security.   The non-students are described to be a white male and 3 African-American males in a white 1990s sedan. The students were treated for injuries at a local hospital and released.

August 22

A GU Student reported that her friend’s vehicle was broken into while parked in the 400 block of East Mission between 4 AM and 4 PM on August 22. A laptop and camera were taken. There was no sign of forced entry. The Spokane Police Department was contacted.

An off-campus residential burglary was reported to GU Security. GU students reported that someone entered their residence in the 400 block of East Augusta while they were away between 9:30 PM and 11:30 PM on August 21. There was no sign of forced entry. Laptops, Ipods, checkbooks, and cash were taken.

August 20

An off-campus residential burglary was reported to GU Security. The burglary occurred in the 1000 block of East Sinto sometime between 1:30 AM and 9:10 AM on August 20, while residents of the house were sleeping.  Several electronic items were taken, including items from one of the rooms where a resident was sleeping. There was no sign of forced entry. The Spokane Police Department was contacted.
