Security Tips for the Holiday Break

November 21, 2014

With Thanksgiving and Christmas breaks fast approaching, students need to be thoughtful about leaving residences unoccupied for extended periods of time. For off-campus students in particular, forward planning and preparations are crucial!

Get your residence checked over break!

If you would like your home checked while you are away on break, the Spokane Police Department Senior Volunteers offers a home check service for free. All doors and windows are physically checked including any out-buildings on your property. For more information or to sign up for the service please call (509)622-5885. *Please note this program does not extend to multi-resident style complexes (homes with several apartments) or apartment style buildings, please contact Campus Security at 509-313-2222 to discuss other available options.

Let trusted neighbors or friends know you are leaving and ask them to keep an eye on your place.

Leave exterior lights on. Lock all gates, doors and windows. Close all curtains.

Residence Hall Patrols

All campus owned Resident Halls will be checked by campus Security throughout Thanksgiving break, November 26 through November 30 and Christmas Holiday break, December 20 through  January 11, 2015.

Vehicles

If you live off-campus, you may want to park your car on campus over holiday breaks. The City of Spokane only allows parking on the street for up to twelve hours at a time. Additionally, your car may be towed or blocked in by snowplows in the event of a snowstorm. Consider utilizing the free parking program offered by Campus Security. No permit is required but you must sign up at the Campus Security office located in lower Welch Hall. Parking is limited and is available on a first-come first-served basis. This service will run from November 21 to December 1 for Thanksgiving break and December 19 to January 11 for Christmas break. Campus Security is not responsible for any damage or theft to vehicles if you choose to utilize this program. Remember to lock your vehicle and remove all valuables that may attract unwanted attention.

If you will be gone more than two to three days, make arrangements to have your mail and newspaper deliveries stopped or picked up by a trusted neighbor or friend.

New Student Arrival

August 19, 2014

Friday August 29, 2014 marks the beginning of the new school year with orientation and most of the first year students moving into their assigned residence hall. We are expecting over 1000 students to descend on campus that day, along with their vehicles, parents, siblings and belongings. For the safety of all persons involved, we are requesting the following:

– Please avoid driving in the northeast portion of the campus from 7am-5pm. Traffic flow in that area will be slow and even stopped at several times, especially with the construction of the new University Center.

– Be aware that some streets and alleys normally used by employees will be closed most of the day.

– There will be no southbound traffic allowed on Cincinnati from Desmet to Lower Kennedy. At that location, Cincinnati will be temporarily restricted to “one way” northbound only until Madonna and Catherine Monica unloading is completed.

– If you must get to the Law School parking area that day and are arriving from the north, please drive southbound on Hamilton to westbound Springfield and then onto Cincinnati to reach the parking lot.

– Pedestrian traffic in all parts of our campus will be quite heavy. Our visitors may be concentrating on other things and not be sufficiently wary of vehicle traffic. Please watch out for them!

– Overall, parking in all lots and areas of campus will be impacted by this event. The Athletic lots north of the Centennial Trail, and the BARC have been designated as “long-term parking” for this weekend. To expedite the move-in process, parents and students will be directed to park at these locations after unloading.

Your patience and goodwill are the keys to a successful day as we embrace the spirit of the new school year. On behalf of the entire security team, let us thank you in advance for your consideration and cooperation in making this event work as planned.

Recommendations for Residence Hall Move-In Friday August 24

    August 15, 2012

    Arrival Recommendations

To expedite the move-in process on campus, Cincinnati Street from Desmet Ave to the Centennial Trail will be restricted to north bound “one-way” traffic only.  To alleviate confusion and/or being “stuck” in traffic, these recommendations were created to assist you during your big day.  It is advisable that you familiarize yourself with our campus and the surrounding neighborhood streets prior to your arrival.

Additionally, be aware that GU has finally broke ground on our much-anticipated multi-tiered parking structure on campus.  The location of the construction site is
Desmet and Cincinnati and takes up an entire city block in size.  When finished, we will truly welcome the addition parking spaces it will provide.  However, please note that this year due to the infant stage of progress or construction, we will not be allowed to utilize any of the property being worked on for parking.  Simply put,
parking for this year’s Opening Day activities will be very, very limited.  Although plans are being reviewed in an attempt to accommodate most move-in day vehicles, please be advised that street parking may be the only space available.

For the below listed Resident Halls, please enter our campus as follows:

    DeSmet Hall:

From east or westbound Sharp Ave, turn southbound (towards campus), onto Standard Street.  Proceed to the marked barricade where a uniform Officer will direct you to your destination.

    Welch Hall:

From Hamilton:  If southbound from Sharp Ave, turn right onto Boone Ave.  Continue one block and turn left at Cincinnati Street.  If northbound from Interstate 90, turn left onto Boone Ave.   Turn left again (next block), onto Cincinnati Street.  Once on Cincinnati, continue towards campus and stop at the temporary stop sign at Desmet Ave, which will be manned by Security Personnel.  Tell the Officer you need to go to “Welch” and you will be directed to your desired destination.

Southbound Cincinnati from Sharp Ave:  Continue driving towards campus to the temporary stop sign.  Tell the uniformed Officer you need to go to “Welch.” In  addition, they will direct you to your destination.

    Madonna/Catherine-Monica:

From Hamilton: If south bound from Sharp Ave, continue past the school all the way to the next tri-light signal.  That will be Spokane Falls Blvd/ Trent Ave.  Turn right and drive one short block to Cincinnati Ave (You’ll see the GU baseball stadium on the corner).  Turn right (north bound), and drive towards campus to the marked barricade which will be manned by uniformed Officers.  Tell the Officers you need to unload at Madonna or Catherine-Monica and they will direct you to your destination.

From Interstate 90:  Take the Hamilton Street off ramp, which ends at Spokane Falls/Trent Ave.  Get into the left turn only lane and turn westbound.  Quickly get into the right lane of Spokane Falls Blvd, as you will be making a right turn at the next street, which is Cincinnati.  Precede north bound to the marked barricade, which will be manned by uniformed Officers.  Tell them Madonna or Catherine-Monica and they will direct you from there.

    Coughlin Hall:

From Hamilton south bound or from Interstate 90:  Follow the same directions stated above under Madonna/Catherine-Monica.  When you arrive at the barricade, just tell the Officer your assigned to Coughlin Hall and you will be directed to the appropriate parking/unloading area.

Please note: You will be notified by  Housing of the “official” check-in/move-in time for your particular Resident Hall.  With your help, the move-in staff will attempt to stay on schedule throughout the day.  However, in some cases do to travel distances, we realize families arrive on campus earlier than requested.  Therefore, should you arrive a few minutes before your assigned time; Campus Security will direct you to a “staging area” near your assigned Resident Hall.

If you must get to the Law School parking area that day and are arriving from the north, it is suggested as an alternative, to use southbound Hamilton to westbound Springfield and then onto Cincinnati to reach the parking lot.

Updated Freshmen Friday Move-In Route Recommendations

    August 23, 2011

Due to installation of a new pedestrian island near Desmet and Hamilton, we are advising northbound Hamilton traffic to turn left on Boone, NOT Desmet.

    Arrival Recommendations:

    DeSmet/Welch:

From Hamilton: If southbound, turn right onto Desmet. If driving northbound, turn left onto Boone. Continue towards campus and turn left on Cincinnati. Stop at the temporary stop sign which will be manned by security personnel. Tell the officer either “DeSmet” or “Welch” and you will be instructed to continue westbound to the next controlled check point. After stopping again, the officer will direct you to your desired destination.

From southbound Cincinnati: Stop at the temporary stop sign which will be manned by security personnel. Tell the officer either “DeSmet” or “Welch” and you will be instructed to continue westbound to the next controlled check point. After stopping again, the officer will direct you to your desired destination.

    Madonna/Catherine-Monica:

From Hamilton: If southbound, turn right onto Desmet. If driving northbound, turn left onto Boone. Continue towards campus and turn left on Cincinnati. Stop at the temporary stop sign which will be manned by security personnel. Tell the officer either “Madonna” or “Catherine-Monica” and you will be instructed to turn left onto Cincinnati and proceed until met by another staff member who will assist you to the proper unloading area.

From south bound Cincinnati: Stop at the temporary stop sign which will be manned by security personnel. Tell the officer either “Madonna” or “Catherine-Monica” and you will be instructed to turn left onto Cincinnati and proceed until met by another staff member who will assist you to the proper unloading area.

    Coughlin Hall:

From southbound Hamilton: Drive past the University to Spokane Falls Blvd and turn right. Proceed one block to Cincinnati and turn right again. Patterson Baseball Complex will be on the corner. Continue up Cincinnati until met by a security staff member. After advising them that you are assigned to Coughlin Hall, you will be instructed to either turn right into the Coughlin Hall parking lot to unload or left into the McCarthey Arena if the dorm lot is full.

If for some chance you enter Cincinnati from the north (at Desmet) immediately advise the staff member that you need to get to Coughlin Hall and you will be allowed, traffic permitting, to continue southbound on Cincinnati. Once you reach Coughlin Hall, advise the security staff member at that location that you are assigned to that dorm and need to unload. You will then be directed to the appropriate parking unloading area.  Please note: To expedite the move-in process on campus, Cincinnati Street from Desmet to Lower Kennedy will be restricted to southbound “one-way” traffic only. To alleviate being “stuck” in traffic from the other dorms, it is advisable for Coughlin Residents only to access the area by utilizing the southernmost portion of Cincinnati from Spokane Falls Blvd. That portion of the road will remain open throughout the day to normal north and south bound vehicle traffic.

    Snow & Parking

    January 9, 2009

Following a record-setting month of snow, Gonzaga Grounds crews have made an outstanding effort to clear parking spaces for the return of classes next Tuesday. However, there will be significantly fewer parking spaces than normally available until all the snow melts. Students, staff, and faculty are encouraged to:

    ·         Carpool with others or have someone drop you off if you can.

    ·         Utilize public transit. For those who live off campus, there are several different buses that serve the GU campus. Only a dollar a ride and no traffic to hassle with!

    ·         Follow parking guidelines. You still need to follow the rules, and we will still be writing tickets.

    ·         Park smart. If you’re not sure it’s a parking space, don’t park there. If your car blocks others in,  we will have it moved to the South Trent lot and you will be responsible for the expense of moving it.

    ·         Walk safe. Watch for icy spots and report especially hazardous areas to Security at 313-2222.

    ·         Practice patience. We’re all in this together.
