Campus Security officers called for Spokane Police Department assistance and then contacted and detained the former student. During a search, they found he was carrying a concealed handgun.  Spokane Police Department officers arrived shortly thereafter. He was trespassed from the Gonzaga campus and transported to the Spokane County jail.  A police investigation is on-going.

Assault on Kardong Bridge

March 18, 2010

On March 17th at around midnight, several male students were walking on the Kardong Bridge (the bridge that crosses the Spokane River just west of the Law School) on their way back to campus.  Several individuals believed to be non-students walked toward them and started taunting the students and challenged them to fight.  The students advised the non-student group that they did not want to fight.  The non-students proceeded to assault the students by punching them.  The students were able to get away and call Spokane Police and Campus Security.   The non-students are described to be caucasian males between the ages of 18 and 22.  One of the non-students was approximately 6′ tall wearing a plaid jacket.  They were last seen northbound on Division Street and Springfield. The students reported minor injuries and declined medical assistance.

As a reminder to our GU community, please remember that SAFE RIDE and Campus Security are available to you.  Walk in well-lit areas and if you are approached by a person or group like the above mentioned, keep walking, ignore the comments, and call the Spokane Police at 911 or Campus Security at 313-2222 right away so we can assist in getting you home safe and deter any criminal activity.

MY ROOMMATE IS DRIVING ME INSANE!

January 29, 2010

So you have had the same roommate for several months or you just got a new roommate at Semester.  How do you deal with a major personality clash?? What about the roommate who secretly borrows your things and then denies ever having them? Or the person who won’t talk to you but sends you a text or an I.M. from a computer….2 feet away from you!

In some cases, it can become a pretty serious issue and may even turn toward violent behavior.  Do you know your resources before it gets to that point??

Here are some steps to help deflate a potentially harmful situation between you and your roommate:

  • Talk honestly and openly to your roommate. People get on each other’s nerves and sometimes become upset. Roommates are no exception.
  • If you are upset or if your roommate is upset, give each other room and time to calm down and reconsider.
  • Work at your relationship with your roommate. Don’t let anger or discontent pile up and explode. Most roommate conflicts are manageable if communication is kept open.
  • Talk to your RA or RD and get them involved.  Use their experience and knowledge with campus life.

If you have a conflict with your roommate that you are afraid may turn physical, let someone know!  Call your RA, RD, or GU Security so we may help mediate and stop an incident before it starts.

If you have become a victim of a physical confrontation or any other crime whether it is your roommate or anyone else on campus, call GU Security.  We will help guide you through whatever process you need from Residence Life assistance to calling local law enforcement if you choose.

Remember to always make healthy choices even in times of conflict.  GU Security is here for you 24/7 so do not hesitate to call us!  313-2222

  • Keep your vehicle locked and all valuables stored in the trunk or remove them completely from the vehicle.

From Wired Campus: ‘I Still Want to Stab a Certain Someone,’ and Other Ideas Not to Post on Facebook

    January 5, 2010

    By Simmi Aujla

Turns out social media, romantic relationships, and mortuary science don’t mix.

A student at the University of Minnesota, smarting from recently getting dumped, wrote on Facebook that she wanted to stab her former man in the throat with a trocar, a tool used to drain dead bodies. When she showed up at mortuary-science class on December 14, according to the Minneapolis Star-Tribune, campus police officers questioned her about the post and banned her from campus while they investigated. The police had heard about the posting from an instructor in the mortuary-science class. The student, Amanda Tatro, was allowed to return later that week, after missing two finals.

Ms. Tatro wrote on Facebook that she was “looking forward to Monday’s embalming therapy. … Give me room, lots of aggression to be taken out with a trocar,” and “I still want to stab a certain someone in the throat with a trocar.”

Tracy Mitrano, director of information-technology policy and the computer-policy and -law program at Cornell University, said it was appropriate for the university to investigate

“It doesn’t surprise me that school officials, at the very least, wanted to talk with her about that posting,” she said. “If people in this day and age do not understand they are making their private thoughts and feelings public [on the Internet], I suppose we need cases like this to remind us of that fact.”

    Magazine Subscription Solicitors

    September 12, 2009

We have received reports of individuals soliciting magazine sales at residence halls on campus. In some cases, these individuals gained access to residence halls to do so. These individuals and the company they represent, Face to Face Technologies, does not have permission to solicit on the Gonzaga campus. If you see them anywhere on campus, please contact GU Security immediately at 313-2222. Face to Face Technologies has an “F” rating from the Better Business Bureau.

An important reminder: you should NEVER allow access to your residence hall to anyone who is not a resident, an authorized staff member (who should be able to provide GU identification) or accompanied by a resident or authorized staff member.

    Robbery suspects arrested

    February 7, 2009

    From today’s Spokesman Review:

Two people were arrested Friday night in connection with a rash of robberies that prompted extra security measures at Spokane payday loan centers and pharmacies.

Spokane police will release the suspects’ names after search warrants have been served, said Lt. Dave McGovern.

The two were arrested about 6:30 p.m. and are believed to be responsible for at least seven robberies and one attempted robbery since January, including the payday loan center robberies and the OxyContin heist at ShopKo Tuesday night, McGovern said.

The alleged crime spree began with robberies at the Northwest Food Mart at 5611 N. Driscoll St. on Jan. 8 and Jan. 11, police said Friday.

The Check and Go, 6411 N. Division St., was robbed Jan. 14, followed by robberies at Check into Cash at 555 E. Francis Ave. on Jan. 20 and Jan. 29.

The Check into Cash at 920 N. Division St. was also hit Jan. 29, and an attempted robbery occurred there Tuesday.

Tuesday’s attempted robbery occurred less than an hour before a major OxyContin robbery at the ShopKo pharmacy, 9520 N. Newport Highway. In each loan center robbery and the ShopKo robbery, the suspect wore a black ski mask and light blue jeans and carried a handgun.

McGovern couldn’t say if just one of the men arrested Friday, or both, is suspected of being the gunman. “We’re trying to figure that all out, too,” he said.

The rash of robberies led to extra pharmacy patrols by the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office. Check into Cash stores also started locking their doors during business hours and asking for identification to enter the store.

Fighting Crime One Beer Can at a Time

    November 26, 2008

Those of us in the crime prevention business have long understood the importance of environmental factors on crime. In fact, a whole discipline – Crime Prevention through Environmental Design or CPTED – is devoted to this pursuit. The most recent issue of the Economist (yeah, Campo does actually read more than comic books) highlights the first study to actually test some of the basic CPTED theories. The findings have interesting implications for how we can significantly reduce crime through simply taking the time to clean up our environment.

    Let there be light

    November 11, 2008

Gonzaga Plant Services Director Ken Sammons, who has been a relentless advocate for pedestrian safety on and near our campus, shared recently that Avista will be installing a new streetlight at the northwest corner of Hamilton & Desmet which will include a mastarm and light facing east. This should significantly improve lighting at the intersection and crosswalk.

We encourage all members of out community to share their ideas to improve the safety of our community. You can contact John VanSant, GU Public Safety & Security Director, at vansant@gonzaga.edu with your ideas.
