Two female visitors to GU reported that around 10:40 PM yesterday evening (June 21), while walking in the area 1100 block of Standard near DeSmet Circle, a silver in color sedan stopped near them. There were three males in the vehicle, described as late twenties/early thirties, all with “scruffy” facial hair. The passenger asked the two if they wanted to “go for a ride”. The two immediately went to a group of people in vicinity of the incident without making contact with the vehicle and reported the incident to a staff member. They reported seeing the vehicle a few moments later on Dakota adjacent to Welch Residence hall and then slowly driveway towards Hamilton.
GU Security responded and checked the area for the vehicle, which could not be located. Gonzaga community members are reminded of the following safety tips:
- If you have to walk, do so in groups especially after dark. Try to use well-lit, busy routes. Be aware of your surroundings.
- Utilize Security escorts to travel across campus: 313-2222.
- Once you are in safe place, report suspicious persons or circumstances immediately to GU Security (313-2222) or SPD (911).

The Logan neighborhood is relatively safe but as with any neighborhood, crimes do occur. Caution should always be exercised when walking through the neighborhood, particularly after dark. If you are out after dark, it is always safest to travel in groups, the larger the better. As often as possible, you should have at least one cell phone within the group. It is recommended that you program the number for Gonzaga Security (509-313-2222) in your cell phone for emergency use. Should you find yourself in a position where you believe your safety to be questionable or compromised, there are several options.

Spokane Police See Dramatic Rise in Honda Thefts |
The Spokane Police Department has received nearly 70 reports of vehicle thefts involving late 80’s to early 90’s model Hondas since the 19th of October. That is almost double the average amount we normally see during that time frame. In response to the increase, Patrol and the Targeted Crime’s Unit stepped up efforts to arrest people on the Repeat Offenders program to try and curb the thefts. Over the weekend they affected ten arrests on known car thieves in the area and police were able to recover 50 of the stolen vehicles.
The arrestees for Possession of Stolen Motor Vehicle include: 35 year old James T. Harris, 33 year old Gabieal M. Hansen, 22 year old Daniel J. Maddock, and 28 year old Brandon L. Witters. Twenty-two year old Timothy J. Lubben was arrested for Theft of a Motor Vehicle and 28 year old Leslie J. Olson was arrested for Taking Motor Vehicle without Permission among other charges.
Repeat Offender 34 year old Cephas W. Parham was arrested on outstanding felony warrants for Possession of a Stolen Motor Vehicle. Officers responded to an address in the Shadle area after receiving information Parham was there. Parham attempted to flee on foot but was contacted by Ofc. Gorman’s K9 Max. Parham fought with the dog several times, which included trying to choke Max out during one of the struggles. Officers caught up with Parham and the K9, but Parham continued to resist arrest until officers were able to get handcuffs on him. He was treated at a local hospital for injuries he sustained from the K9 contact. Ofc. Gorman noted that the extent of Parham’s injuries were more severe because Parham fought with Max rather than giving up once he was contacted.
Police would like to remind people that own vehicles in the high risk category for thefts, typically Toyotas and Hondas in the late 80’s to early 90’s range, would benefit from the added protection of a theft prevention device such as “The Club”. For more information please visit this link:

Some Halloween Safe-Partying Tips
If you go to a costume party, go with a group of friends you know and trust.
- Always carry a photo ID, and make sure your friends carry identification and phone numbers with them in case they become incapacitated for any reason.
- Consider your costume, and avoid wearing one that inhibits your ability to see and move freely. Use special caution when crossing the street, and be sure motorists see you before you cross.
- Some people who want to cause harm may take advantage of being unrecognizable in a Halloween costume. Stay in an environment where you can easily get help or move away from someone who is threatening your safety. Be aware of your surroundings.
- If you are intoxicated, your impaired judgment places you at a much greater risk for injury, unwanted sexual contact, or a police citation. Set a drink limit for yourself and stick to it. (Or plan not to drink alcohol at all.)
- If you accept a beverage from someone, make sure that you know the individual, you have observed the drink being prepared, and you never leave it unattended. Exercise caution in any public setting with any beverage.
- Make a plan to get home safely. If you have no other safe option, you can utilize Gonzaga Saferide for rides back to your on-campus or near-campus residence. 568-8000. Halloween is one of the busiest nights of the year for cabs, so please be prepared to wait for your ride.
If you plan to host a party, please visit the Gonzaga Off-Campus Living guide at: http://www.gonzaga.edu/student-life/Off-Campus-Living/OffCampusGuide.pdf . You’ll find some great tips for safely hosting guests and a social gathering on pages 16-19.
