Beware of Door to Door Alarm Sales

July 14, 2010
Spokane City Police News Release from July 14th 2010
Citizens living in the City of Spokane need to be aware of door to door alarm sales. For the past few years, several out-of-state companies have brought a college-aged sales force into our local community to perform aggressive door to door sales of their residential alarm systems.

Spokane Police Department is suggesting that prior to signing any paperwork with an alarm company, they should ask about the Spokane City False Alarm Reduction Program. Every reputable alarm company will know that you must register your alarm system with the City of Spokane to be eligible for police response.

Beware of sales tactics that misrepresent themselves from the homeowner’s current alarm company. They may claim there is a problem with your current system and they are there to fix it. Police suggest a citizen contact their current alarm company before changing the current system.

Some salespersons may require the homeowner to sign a new monitoring contract; charging higher fees made payable to a different company than your current one.

Police encourage consumers to always double check with the Better Business Bureau if you have questions BEFORE agreeing to purchase an alarm system or sign a monitoring contract. This has been a nationwide phenomenon and there have been thousands of consumer fraud complaints.

Remember – a legitimate alarm company will come to your home only after making an appointment and will seldom ever show up at the door without your knowledge. If in doubt, call the current alarm company to confirm the identity of someone representing them. You have the right to ask a person to leave your home or premises and if they continue with their sales efforts after you have asked them to leave, notify the police.

Police recommend conducting a google search of “summer alarm sales complaints” or similar wording to find names of problem companies.

SPD News Release – Off Duty Officer Locates Stolen Vehicle – Ninth in One Week

March 3, 2010

On 03/02/10, Officer Glenn Bartlett was off duty when a black Nissan Pathfinder pulled in front of him.  He immediately recognized this vehicle as being stolen as he had taken the report earlier in the day while on duty.  Officer Bartlett contacted police dispatch and continued to follow the vehicle to the Shadle Wal-Mart parking lot.  Investigative Sergeant Dan Torok was also off duty and on his way home when he responded to assist while waiting for on duty units to arrive and recover the vehicle.

Officer Erin Raleigh, Officer Frank Erhart and Officer Nick Geren arrived on scene and contacted the occupants of the vehicle.  Officers later placed the driver, Christal N. Helsley, 36, under arrest for Possession of a Stolen Vehicle.

Since February 25th, there has been an increase in stolen vehicle activity in the area of 12th Ave and South Ivory St.  Several vehicles have been stolen from and recovered in a six mile radius of that location, including the Nissan Pathfinder recovered by Officer Bartlett.

Over his last five day work week, which ended yesterday, Officer Bartlett has recovered nine stolen vehicles.  Bartlett’s patrol car is equipped with two cameras and an automatic license-plate recognition system allowing him to scan vehicle license plates and compare it against a nationwide database of stolen vehicles, allowing him to recover stolen cars faster.

While this does give Spokane Police Department another tool to assist them with stolen vehicles, citizens can still take precautions when leaving their vehicles unattended to avoid having their vehicle become a target.

  • Secure Your Vehicle – park in a locked garage or well lit area, lock your doors, don’t leave the engine running unattended.
  • Sterilize Your Vehicle – avoid leaving anything of value in plain sight inside the vehicle.
  • Anti-Theft Devices – clubs, alarm systems

  • A FEW QUICK TIPS:

  • If you will be gone more than two to three days, make arrangements to have your newspaper and mail deliveries stopped or picked up by a trusted neighbor or friend.
  • Lock all gates, doors and windows.
  • Close all window curtains.
  • If you are leaving your vehicle at home, take all items of value out of it and make sure it is locked.

  • Remove the incentive for vehicle prowls!

    March 2, 2010

Lately, we’ve seen an increase in the number of vehicles being broken into, mostly out in the neighborhood. The common factor in these thefts is the visible presence of “incentives”: cash, CD’s, Ipods, purses, wallets, checkbooks, backpacks, laptops.

Remember, most “vehicle prowlers” will check your vehicle for these incentives first, then break in – not the other way around. If you want to reduce your chance of having your car broken into, remove the incentive. Take enticing items with you if you can. At least conceal them (for example, put them in your trunk) if you can’t.

    It’s that simple.

MY ROOMMATE IS DRIVING ME INSANE!

    January 29, 2010

So you have had the same roommate for several months or you just got a new roommate at Semester.  How do you deal with a major personality clash?? What about the roommate who secretly borrows your things and then denies ever having them? Or the person who won’t talk to you but sends you a text or an I.M. from a computer….2 feet away from you!

In some cases, it can become a pretty serious issue and may even turn toward violent behavior.  Do you know your resources before it gets to that point??

Here are some steps to help deflate a potentially harmful situation between you and your roommate:

    • Talk honestly and openly to your roommate. People get on each other’s nerves and sometimes become upset. Roommates are no exception.
    • If you are upset or if your roommate is upset, give each other room and time to calm down and reconsider.
    • Work at your relationship with your roommate. Don’t let anger or discontent pile up and explode. Most roommate conflicts are manageable if communication is kept open.
    • Talk to your RA or RD and get them involved.  Use their experience and knowledge with campus life.

If you have a conflict with your roommate that you are afraid may turn physical, let someone know!  Call your RA, RD, or GU Security so we may help mediate and stop an incident before it starts.

If you have become a victim of a physical confrontation or any other crime whether it is your roommate or anyone else on campus, call GU Security.  We will help guide you through whatever process you need from Residence Life assistance to calling local law enforcement if you choose.

Remember to always make healthy choices even in times of conflict.  GU Security is here for you 24/7 so do not hesitate to call us!  313-2222

    Go Figure!

    January 14, 2010

The City of Spokane is the host for the 2010 US Figure Skating Championships which starts today and will end on January 24th.  There are over 270 competitors in the competition and many more visitors coming to Spokane to watch them.  If you are planning on going down town or will be attending functions off campus and normally call for a cab ride for transportation, plan to have a longer wait period than normal.  Plan ahead for your pick up time and be patient for your ride because there will be more traffic congestion in the area. Remember a few tips on personal safety:

    • If you plan on attending a function downtown or anywhere off campus, go with a group of people.
    • If you are able, leave any valuables at home such as wallets, purses, iPods.  These are easy pickings if left in a booth or on a table at a club or party even if you just get up for a minute to dance, use the restroom, etc.
    • If you are walking, wear appropriate clothing such as light and reflective colors so drivers can see you in dimly lit areas.
    • UTILIZE SAFERIDE!  If you are uncomfortable where you are or fear for your safety with no safe way home, call SafeRide at (509) 568-8000.  Have your Student I.D. on you and receive a free ride back to campus.
    • Look out for each other and use the buddy system.  Be a good bystander and call saferide for a friend or call Security at (509)313-2222 if you are close to campus for an escort…no questions asked.

Our priority here at Gonzaga Security is you….please make yourself a priority as well and make good decisions and look out for each other.

    Packages Stolen Over Winter Break

    January 13, 2010

Campus Security received a report that 2 GU students had packages that were delivered to their off-campus residence while on winter break.  When they came back from break, the packages were gone.  One of the packages contained text books and the other contained shoes.

It is unfortunate that this happened to our community members but also reminds us that there may be better ways to have your mail delivered when you are gone.  Here are some things that you may not have known:

    • Whether you live on campus or off, you may rent a mailbox from the Gonzaga Mail Room for $35.00 per school year.  Right now they are offering mailbox rentals for $20.00 for the rest of the school year.  If you live on or off-campus and you have a mailbox through Gonzaga ,you can have packages delivered to the secure mail room.
    • The United States Parcel Service offers the following service if you will be away from your off-campus residence for any period of time:

Remember, Campus Safety & Security is here 24/7 to answer any questions about crime prevention and services offered to you. Call any time at  509-313-2222.

    Tips to Reduce the Risk

    • Remember that alcohol is still #1 date rape drug. Persons who drink alcohol are more likely to be sexually assaulted.
    • Never leave a drink unattended, even for just a minute.
    • If someone wants to buy you a drink, go with that person when they buy it so you can keep track of the drink.
    • When holding your drink, hold it so where your hand is covering the top.
    • If you or a friend feels extremely drunk after only a few drinks, get help because you may have been drugged.
    • Other two predator drugs being used are roofies and GHB. Both make you feel drunk after 20-30 minutes. Both can cause amnesia and unconsciousness for three to eight hours.
    • If you go into a room and the person locks the door, leave immediately.
    • Go to a party with your friends and always leave together. If someone you just met wants to walk you home, thank him/her for the offer, but leave with the group you came with. You can always see this person the next day, when you’re both sober.

REMEMBER….any beverage including Juice, tea, coffee, soda and water can be drugged too.
