SPD News Release: Car thieves tools of choice

November 6, 2009

On November 4, 2009, just before 4pm, Spokane Police Ofc. Jeff McCollough located a stolen vehicle near Olympic and Helena.  He contacted the male driver, Brendon T. Kaluza-Graham (10/16/87), whose license was suspended.

Ofc. McCollough discovered the 1997 Honda Accord that Kaluza-Graham had been driving had stolen Idaho license plates, and the vehicle itself was reported stolen. The ignition of the vehicle had been punched and damaged.

Inside the vehicle, patrol officers located screw drivers, work gloves, a pair of used rubber gloves, and an allen wrench that had been ground down to resemble a vehicle key.  Another set of vehicle plates and other screwdrivers and shaved keys were also located.

Kaluza-Graham was booked into Spokane County Jail for Possession of a Stolen Motor Vehicle.  See attached photos of property taken from the vehicle.

Citizens are reminded that if they see anything unusual in their neighborhood, whether its a vehicle parked in the same location for more than a few days to unusual pedestrian traffic, they are urged to call police.  Many of the vehicle thefts take place in a matter of minutes.

Sexual Assault Reported

October 5, 2009

A sexual assault was reported by a Gonzaga student yesterday afternoon (October 4). The student reported that the incident took place in a friend’s room in a residence hall during the early morning hours of October 4. The suspect was described as a male between 18-20 years of age, of average height and build, possibly a student.  The student believes she may have been drugged. The student has contacted the Spokane Police Department (SPD) and an investigation is ongoing. The University is providing support to the student and assisting SPD in the investigation.

Gonzaga’s Sexual Assault Response Team (SART) First Responders are available to provide support and guidance through the campus system and assistance with the resources available both on and off campus.  First Responders are available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year by calling Security Dispatch at 313-2222 and asking for a SART First Responder.

SAFeT (Sexual Assault & Family Trauma) is an off-campus service that offers trained advocates who can offer crisis intervention, information and referral resources, legal advocacy, and support for friends and family.  SAFeT’s 24 hour crisis line can be accessed by calling (509) 624-7272.

The Student Life Case Manager will work with anyone who reports sexual misconduct to ensure that resources are available to the individual.  Please call 509-313-4175 or stop by the Student Life Office.

Steps to Reduce Your Risk of Drug-Facilitated Sexual Assault:

  • Go out with and stay with friends – perpetrators isolate the victim to make committing a sexual assault easier.
  • Keep your drink with you at all times – setting it down for even a second is enough time for someone to tamper with it.
  • Get your own drinks – even if you know the person who is offering the drinks.
  • Avoid punch bowls – or other drinks that are highly accessible to being tampered with.
  • Avoid taking drinks that have candy or other objects in them – these objects may be used to disguise the appearance or taste of drugs in the drink.
  • Confront rumors or evidence of drugging – perpetrators use silence and secrecy to commit assaults
  • Get help for anyone who seems like they may have been drugged – even if you don’t know them, stay with them.
  • If you drink, drink responsibly – intoxication will lessen your awareness of what is going on around you.

We want all of our community members to be safe. Remember:

  • If you have to walk, do so in groups especially after dark. Try to use well-lit, busy routes. Be aware of your surroundings.
  • Utilize Saferide if you need a ride back to your residence from an off-campus location: call 568-8000.
  • Utilize Security escorts to travel across campus: 313-2222.
  • Once you are in safe place, report all crimes immediately to police at 911 and GU Security at 313-2222.

Security Notice – Strong-arm Robbery reported in the Logan Neighborhood

A Gonzaga student reported this afternoon that sometime between midnight and 1:00 AM this morning (September 20) while walking alone in the 500 or 600 block of East Augusta, he was knocked to the ground and punched by two male subjects. One of the subjects removed his wallet from his back pocket, took the cash out, and returned the wallet. They then fled on foot. The student did not contact the Spokane Police Department (SPD) or GU Security at the time. Two GU-contracted Spokane Police Department patrol units were on duty in the neighborhood at the time of the incident. The subjects were described as white males in their 20’s of average height and build, wearing hoodies (worn down). GU Security strongly encouraged the student to report this to the SPD.

Gonzaga community members are reminded of the following safety tips:

  • If you have to walk, do so in groups especially after dark. Try to use well-lit, busy routes. Be aware of your surroundings.
  • Utilize Saferide if you need a ride back to your residence from an off-campus location: call 568-8000.
  • Utilize Security escorts to travel across campus: 313-2222.
  • Report suspicious persons or circumstances immediately to GU Security (313-2222) or SPD (911).
  • Once you are in safe place, report all crimes immediately to police at 911 and GU Security at 313-2222.

Security Notice – Reported Armed Robbery Near Campus

September 20, 2009

A Gonzaga student reported that at about 11:00 PM last night (September 19) a male subject followed him from Safeway, attempting to engage him in conversation. Near the corner of Hamilton and Sinto, the subject showed the student what appeared to be the butt of a handgun concealed in a small bag and asked him for his wallet.  The student (very wisely) gave the subject his wallet and the subject left the area.  Spokane Police Department officers responded and searched the area, but did not locate the subject. The subject was described as a male in his 20’s of average height and thin build, with a dark complexion, wearing baggy clothing and tennis shoes. He was carrying a cloth-type satchel with pull-strings.

Gonzaga community members are reminded of the following safety tips:

  • If you have to walk, do so in groups especially after dark. Try to use well-lit, busy routes. Be aware of your surroundings.

Off-Campus Residence Burglarized

September 16, 2009

GU Security received a report last night at 9:00 PM that a residence in the 200 block of East Sharp was burglarized. Between 1:00 AM and 8:00 AM on September 15th, while residents were sleeping, an unknown person or persons entered through an unlocked door and took two purses from the living room.

This is a reminder to ALWAYS lock your doors and windows, even when you are at home!

Spokane Police to do Pedestrian Emphasis Patrol

September 15, 2009

Pedestrian Emphasis near Gonzaga on Thursday

The Spokane Police Department’s Traffic Unit has had an increase in the number of complaints of drivers failing to yield in crosswalks.  Thursday, September 17th, we will focus our efforts in the Gonzaga area with an emphasis patrol for pedestrian safety.  The college district near Hamilton and Sharp will be the focus of the emphasis.  Sharp west of Hamilton is a 25 mile per hour zone because of the amount of pedestrians headed to Gonzaga.

Drivers are reminded that not all crosswalks are marked.  In fact, most crosswalks in the city are not.  The law states a driver of an approaching vehicle shall stop and remain stopped to allow a pedestrian or bicycle to cross the roadway within an unmarked or marked crosswalk when the pedestrian or bicycle is upon or within one lane of the half of the roadway upon which the vehicle is traveling or onto which it is turning. For purposes of this law, “half of the roadway” means all traffic lanes carrying traffic in one direction of travel, and includes the entire width of a one-way roadway.

Last year, in Spokane City there were127 crashes reported involving pedestrians, with 101 injuries, making this issue a priority for the Traffic Unit.  Below is a chart that shows how just a slight increase in speed can have devastating consequences.

Pedestrian fatality risk at various striking vehicle speeds:

Vehicle Speed     Fatality Risk

14 mph                5%

21                        10

25                        25

28                        58

30                        75

35                        99

To report areas with repeated violations call the Traffic Hotline (509) 625-4150.

Visitor to GU Reports Assault

August 29, 2009

Gonzaga Security received a report at 11:32 PM last night (8/28/09) that a non-student who was visiting a student at Gonzaga was knocked to the ground by two persons at about 9:45 PM. She reported that one of the subjects put a hand over her mouth, but she was able to get away and run to campus where she located her student friend. She said she was not injured except for some minor scrapes. The visitor was not sure exactly where this assault occurred, or even whether it was on or off the campus. She was not able to describe the two persons or what clothing they wore. She did not contact police or Campus Security at the time of the incident.   Spokane Police were advised later.  The incident remains under investigation.  Both Campus Security and Spokane Police will be patrolling the campus and adjacent area.

Gonzaga Security reminds all of our community members to always:

Walk in groups, especially at night.

Walk in well-lit areas.

Be aware of your surroundings.

Once you are in safe place, report all crimes immediately to police at 911 and GU Security at 313-2222.

Burglary Reported at Off-Campus Residence

May 6, 2009

GU Security received a report last night at 10:40 PM that a residence in the 900 block of East Augusta was burglarized. While residents were upstairs with friends, an unknown person or persons entered through an unlocked door and took several items from the first floor and basement, including laptops, a camera, a cell phone, and a wallet containing cash and credit cards. The Spokane Police Department responded and collected evidence from the residence.

This is a reminder to ALWAYS lock your doors and windows, even when you are at home!

It’s that simple (to stop thefts from vehicles)

February 17, 2009

We’re seeing a pretty significant number of vehicles being broken into, mostly out in the neighborhood. The common factor in these thefts is the visible presence of “incentives”: cash, CD’s, Ipods, purses, wallets, checkbooks, backpacks, laptops.

Remember, most “vehicle prowlers” will check your vehicle for these incentives first, then break in – not the other way around. If you want to reduce your chance of having your car broken into, remove the incentive. Take enticing items with you if you can. At least conceal them (for example, put them in your trunk) if you can’t.

It’s that simple.

>    First, our first event is going to be this Sunday at 3:00 pm in the

> Madonna basement.  We will be baking and decorating cookies for the

Suspicious Persons Reported in 1000 Block of East Boone Last Night

January 27, 2009

We had two suspicious person reports in the 1000 block of East Boone last night, one at about 10:15 PM and another just after midnight. In both cases a subject was observed outside a window. Only one had a physical description: white male, thin build, in his 20s, wearing dark clothing. GU Security and the Spokane Police Department searched the area in both cases but were unable to locate the individual.

While we don’t know that they are linked to the recent burglaries, we always encourage community members to report suspicious persons and activities immediately to 911, and then GU Security (313-2222). This was a great example of community members being proactive.

Just one more reminder: ALWAYS lock your doors and windows and close curtains and blinds, especially at night.

Logan Neighborhood Burglaries

January 26, 2009

It’s pretty obvious from the reports we’ve been seeing the last two weeks that someone is targeting the neighborhood for burglaries. The Spokane Police Department is actively investigating some leads. In the meantime, there are some easy steps you can take to help protect your property.

·         Lock your doors and windows. Keep curtains & blinds closed.

·         Make sure all of your exterior lights are working.

·         Report crimes immediately. 911.

·         Report suspicious persons and activities immediately. 911.

Help Stop Car Thieves

December 17, 2008

During the last week, we have seen 4 GU Student’s vehicles stolen, including 1 on campus. These criminals can be difficult to catch, as they often use “shaved keys” that work on many different vehicles of a certain model, make, and year. There are things we can do help prevent these thefts, however. Visit the Washington Auto Theft Prevention Authority to learn more about vehicle theft and how you can help prevent it.
