March 7

Spokane Police advised Gonzaga Security of a report of shots fired in the area of Cincinnati and Sinto at about 1:18 AM. A subject in a wheelchair was subsequently arrested for discharging a firearm into the air. The weapon was seized. The subject was later cited and released. The subject is a transient, in his late 20’s.

March 2

A student reported the theft of a laptop and Ipod from his vehicle while it was parked overnight in the parking lot south of Kennedy Apartments. A window was broken to gain access.

March 2

A student reported that a suspicious person attempted to “grab” her as she walked by Jepson’s northeast entry at about 10:44 PM. She said she yelled and ran from the area to Crosby where a friend convinced her to call Campus Security. Officers responded but did not locate a subject matching the description in the area. The student reported the the subject did not touch her, say anything, or follow her. Campus Security  reviewed cameras near the northeast entry but did not observe the subject. The subject was described as a white male, in his 40’s, wearing a white beanie cap and dark jacket.

A student’s vehicle was broken into near Corkery. It is unknown at this time if any items are missing.

A student reported his phone missing from a room in Campion Hall.

March 1

A window on a student’s vehicle was found broken while parked in the 700 block of East Sinto. Nothing was found missing.

A student reported a suspicious white male in his 30’s attempting to sell a ring to her near Tilford. Security verified he was not the same subject in the Burch incident.

February 28

A student reported the theft of a bathing suit from her room at Coughlin Hall.

February 27

A student reported a suspicious person following her near Burch Apartments (see previous posts).

A vehicle was stolen from in front of a student’s non-campus residence in the 800 block of East Baldwin. It was later recovered in the Valley.

This individual is a person of interest in regards to suspicious behavior in the area of the Burch Apartments and Martin Center.  If you happen to see him on campus, GU Security would like to talk to him. Please call 313-2222.


Suspicious Person

February 28, 2011

On Sunday February 27, 2011 at 3:42 PM, a student called campus security to report that at about 3:25 PM a male subject had followed her from Rudolf Fitness Center to her on-campus apartment. After she entered her apartment, the male knocked on the door and asked for the student by name. Without opening the door, the student’s roommate told the male to leave. He complied. Campus Security responded and contacted the male in the area, identified him as a non-student, and trespassed him from campus. The subject is described as a white male, 34 years of age, brown hair, thin build, and clean-shaven. A report has been filed with Spokane Police and they are investigating.

Gonzaga community members are reminded of the following safety tips: 

  • If you have to walk, do so in groups especially after dark. Try to use well-lit, busy routes. Be aware of your surroundings.
  • Utilize Security escorts to travel across campus: 313-2222.
  • Utilize Saferide if you need a ride back to your residence from an off-campus location: call 568-8000.
  • Report suspicious persons or circumstances immediately to GU Security (313-2222) or SPD (911).
  • Always lock exterior doors to your residence, even in a residence hall.

Suspicious solicitor still seeking sympathy

She’s back. Our suspicious solicitor (see the February 10th post) has been out in Logan asking for money the last 2 nights around 10 PM. Black female, heavy build, 20’s, says her name is Jasmine. Call Spokane Police & Campo (313-2222) immediately if you see her.

A student reported the theft of  parts from his bike while it was secured to a post in the Coughlin Hall parking garage.

February 18

A student reported that a GPS unit was taken from her vehicle while parked near Lincoln Hall. There was no sign of forced entry.

February 17

A student reported that another vehicle ran into her car while she was driving in the 100 block of East Boone near Kennedy Apartments. The vehicle sped away. the student was not injured. Spokane Police were contacted.

A student reported damage to an exterior mirror on his vehicle while it was parked in the 1200 block of North Dakota.

A student reported her bike was taken from an off-campus residence in the 1100 block of north Superior. A cable lock was cut.


Suspicious Solicitor Seeking Sympathy

Gonzaga Security has received three reports in the last week of a subject pleading for money in the Logan Neighborhood. In all three reports, a female shared with students personal information (such as a child in the hospital) in an appeal for cash. While this may be a legitimate request, we encourage community members to contact Spokane Police and Gonzaga Security immediately if they are approached with a similar plea for assistance.

February 1

A student reported her laptop missing from a desk at Foley Library. She had left for 90 minutes to attend a class, and when she returned, it was gone. A person of interest was identified and a report filed with Spokane Police.

A student reported the theft of his laptop from his unlocked apartment at Kennedy Apartments.

January 30

A student living in the 1800 block of North Addison reported that a tall, heavyset African American female came to her door and asked for money for a sick child. After giving her some money, the female left in a vehicle.

January 28

A student was struck by a vehicle while crossing Hamilton at Desmet and transported to a local hospital for treatment.

The theft of a computer from a classroom at Jepson was reported. A report was filed with Spokane Police, and a subject identified as a “person of interest”.

January 23

A staff member reported that a credit card was removed from her wallet in an unsecured office area at McCarthey Arena. The card was subsequently used to purchase items at downtown businesses. Spokane Police are investigating.

January 20

A student reported her vehicle was broken into while parked in the alley south of the 400 block of East Sharp. Nothing was found missing.

Security Alert – Logan Neighborhood Incident

January 28, 2011

A Gonzaga student reported today that at about 2:00 AM this morning (January 28) while walking alone in the 700 block of East Sinto, a light blue older sedan came to a stop near her. There were two males in the vehicle, both of college age. The passenger, wearing a blue sweatshirt and sweats, exited the vehicle and asked if she needed a ride home. When she declined, the subject grabbed her arm in what she believed was an attempt to pull her toward the vehicle. She yelled loudly, wrenched her arm free, and ran to a nearby residence where a friend lived.

After about 20 minutes, she continued walking home alone. She reported that she was not injured. The student did not contact the Spokane Police Department (SPD) or GU Security at the time of the incident.  

Gonzaga community members are reminded of the following safety tips:

January 14, 2011

A staff member reported that somebody had entered his vehicle and removed a pair of gloves and two utility knives while it was parked between Plant Services and Schoenberg. The staff member reported that he did not lock the vehicle.

A student reported that cash was taken from his residence hall room between January 5 and January 7.

A student reported his Specialized bike missing from the bike rack between Roncalli and Lincoln Halls. It had been secured with a U-Lock.

December 15

A non-student was trespassed from Univeristy property for viewing pornography on a computer in the  College Hall computer lab.

December 14

A student reported her bike missing from the bike rack near River Inn. The student stated her U-Bolt lock was still attached to the rack, but her bike was gone.

December 13

A student reported items taken from her purse while at a party in the 600 block of East Nora.

December 12

A non-student discharged several shots into two vehicles parked in the Coughlin Hall parking garage. He was apprehended by Spokane Police about ten minutes later after a brief foot pursuit. See previous Campo posts.

December 11

A student reported that she was walking near Sharp and Standard at about 2:20 PM when a male subject exposed himself. See previous Campo post.

A visitor to St. Alyuicious church reported her purse missing. She had left it unattended in a foyer area. It was later found in College Hall, minus $75 cash.

December 10

Two Gonzaga students reported that at about 9:45 PM a male subject approached them near Dakota and Sharp and, while displaying a knife, demanded money. When the students refused, the subject spit on them but did not attempt to otherwise physically harm them. Both parties then walked away. See previous Campo post.

December 9

A student reported her bike missing from the bike rack at Madonna. It had been secured with a cable lock.

December 7

A student reported her Trek mountain bike missing from a bike rack at Coughlin Hall. It had been secured with a U-lock.

A student reported his Wii missing from the basement common area of Marian where he had left it unattended.

Update on fatal shooting
Early Sunday morning, December 12, 2010, around 1:30am, a woman called police from a residence in the 800 block of East Augusta, to report that her daughter was bleeding profusely. The woman reported that her daughter’s boyfriend may have “done this to her”. When officers arrived, they found the female victim inside a bedroom with at least one gunshot wound to the face. Medical personnel responded and transported Samantha Franco to a local hospital where she was pronounced dead.

Franco’s mother gave officers a description of the 24 year old suspect, Tristen Jordan. Patrol officers immediately began searching for Jordan. Meanwhile, there were reports of vehicles being shot at in the parking garage underneath Couglin Hall on the Gonzaga Campus, 800 N. Cincinnati. Officers responded to the garage and found two vehicles that had been shot with a handgun.

Officers located Jordan near the McCarthy Center, 800 N. Cincinnati, bleeding from a gunshot wound to the head. Jordan fled when approached by police but was captured after a short foot pursuit. A handgun, which investigators believe is the murder weapon, was located in a parking lot near 700 N. Hamilton.

Jordan was transported to a local hospital for treatment and has since been flown to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. Jordan remains in police custody and is facing 1st degree Murder charges.

Fatal Shooting Occurs in Logan Neighborhood
     The Spokane Police Major Crimes Unit is investigating a fatal shooting that occurred on December 12th, 2010 at approximately 1:30 AM at a private residence in the Logan Neighborhood.  Major Crimes Detectives have a person of interest in custody and have no other outstanding subjects.

     Although the shooting occurred just north of the Gonzaga University District, no G.U. students were involved.  This crime is currently under investigation, so no other information will be released at this time.  Future inquiries should be referred to Spokane Police Major Crimes Office or Officer Jen Deruwe  


Gunshots reported on campus; subject taken into custody

December 12, 2010

Early this morning, Gonzaga Security received several reports of what was believed to be gunshots near Coughlin Hall.  Spokane Police responded quickly and placed a subject into custody in the McCarthey Center parking lot. Measures were taken immediately to protect residents of nearby residence halls. No Gonzaga community members were involved or harmed, and there is no on-going threat to the Gonzaga community. The subject was not associated with Gonzaga University. Spokane Police are conducting an investigation into the incident.
