A Gonzaga student reported today, March 20, 2015 a person entered a University-Leased Apartments in the 200 block of East Sinto and took personally owned property. It is believed the intruder gained access through the main door of the apartment. GU Security was notified at the time of discovery as well as Spokane Police Department who also responded and completed a report.

Here are some important steps you can take to help protect your property:

* Ensure doors are locked. Residents are reminded to not prop doors open.
* Report all crimes immediately to the police at 509-456-2233 and Campus Security at 509-313-2222.
* Report suspicious persons and activities immediately!
If you encounter a subject in your residence or work space, do not attempt to confront them. Go to a safe place and call 911.
Please notify Campus Security of such incidents as soon as possible so that others in the community can be alerted.

With Thanksgiving and Christmas breaks fast approaching, students need to be thoughtful about leaving residences unoccupied for extended periods of time. For off-campus students in particular, forward planning and preparations are crucial!

Get your residence checked over break!

If you would like your home checked while you are away on break, the Spokane Police Department Senior Volunteers offers a home check service for free. All doors and windows are physically checked including any out-buildings on your property. For more information or to sign up for the service please call (509)622-5885. *Please note this program does not extend to multi-resident style complexes (homes with several apartments) or apartment style buildings, please contact Campus Security at 509-313-2222 to discuss other available options.

Let trusted neighbors or friends know you are leaving and ask them to keep an eye on your place.

Leave exterior lights on. Lock all gates, doors and windows. Close all curtains.

Residence Hall Patrols

All campus owned Resident Halls will be checked by campus Security throughout Thanksgiving break, November 26 through November 30 and Christmas Holiday break, December 20 through  January 11, 2015.

Vehicles

A student reported today between 11:15 PM and midnight August 30, person(s) unknown entered a non-University owned off-campus residence in the 700 block of East Nora. It appears the suspect(s) removed a window screen from a first floor window and then entered through the unlocked window. The student reported her purse and contents were the only items taken. The residence was occupied at the time of the burglary. Spokane Police Department was notified, responded and completed a report.

* Lock your doors and windows. Keep curtains and blinds closed, especially at night.
* Report suspicious persons and activities immediately to 911.

Welcome to Gonzaga! Friday, August 29^th 2014 is the first day new students can move in to residence halls.  Below the instructions please note there is a map for you refer to. Two major changes in traffic flow on the university campus will allow easy access for unloading and parking:

–   Cincinnati Street from the Centennial trail to Desmet Avenue shall only be a northbound one-way street;

–  Desmet Avenue from Cincinnati to Hamilton Street shall only be an eastbound one-way street to allow egress for departing vehicles. To access Cincinnati Street, you must turn west onto Spokane Falls Boulevard from Hamilton Street and then turn north onto Cincinnati Street.

In order to reduce the wait time for students to unload their belongings; we recommend that after you have completed unloading your vehicle you park your vehicle in the parking garage located at Desmet and Cincinnati, any Gonzaga-owned parking lot, or street parking; and then finish moving into your respective residence hall.

To ease any confusion on how to arrive to your respective residence hall, please follow these directions:

Coughlin Hall/Catherine-Monica/Madonna:

Turn north onto Cincinnati Street (one street west of Hamilton Street) from Spokane Falls Boulevard and continue north to the Centennial Trail where a uniformed staff member shall direct you to your respective residence hall for parking. Coughlin Hall is the first residence hall on your right, Catherine-Monica is the second on your right, and Madonna is the third on the right.

Twohy Hall:

Twohy Hall is located on the corner of Boone Avenue (one street south of Sharp Avenue) and Cincinnati Street. You may park anywhere possible to unload.

Roncalli/Lincoln/Alliance:

Roncalli and Lincoln are located on the north side of Boone Avenue between Cincinnati and Dakota Street (two streets west of Hamilton Street, six streets from Ruby). Alliance is located across Dakota Street from Lincoln. You may park on the street or in the alley to unload.

Dillon/Goller:

Dillon and Goller Halls are located between Standard (three streets west of Hamilton, and five streets east of Ruby) and Dakota just south of Sharp Avenue. To park and unload, you must either turn south onto Standard or Dakota Street. You must then turn into the alley between the aforementioned streets where parking is provided.

Crimont Hall:

Crimont is located on the west side of Standard Street just north of Sharp Avenue. There is parking in the alley, or you may park on the street.

 Welch Hall:

If you are arriving from Sharp Avenue – turn south onto Dakota Street and continue to Boone Avenue where a uniformed staff member shall direct you to a parking space.

If you are arriving from Hamilton Street – turn west onto Boone Avenue and continue to Dakota where a uniformed staff member shall direct you to a parking space.

Desmet Hall:

Turn south onto Standard from Sharp Avenue and continue south where a uniformed staff member shall direct you to a parking space.

Friday August 29, 2014 marks the beginning of the new school year with orientation and most of the first year students moving into their assigned residence hall. We are expecting over 1000 students to descend on campus that day, along with their vehicles, parents, siblings and belongings. For the safety of all persons involved, we are requesting the following:

– Please avoid driving in the northeast portion of the campus from 7am-5pm. Traffic flow in that area will be slow and even stopped at several times, especially with the construction of the new University Center.

– Be aware that some streets and alleys normally used by employees will be closed most of the day.

– There will be no southbound traffic allowed on Cincinnati from Desmet to Lower Kennedy. At that location, Cincinnati will be temporarily restricted to “one way” northbound only until Madonna and Catherine Monica unloading is completed.

– If you must get to the Law School parking area that day and are arriving from the north, please drive southbound on Hamilton to westbound Springfield and then onto Cincinnati to reach the parking lot.

– Pedestrian traffic in all parts of our campus will be quite heavy. Our visitors may be concentrating on other things and not be sufficiently wary of vehicle traffic. Please watch out for them!

– Overall, parking in all lots and areas of campus will be impacted by this event. The Athletic lots north of the Centennial Trail, and the BARC have been designated as “long-term parking” for this weekend. To expedite the move-in process, parents and students will be directed to park at these locations after unloading.

A Gonzaga staff member reported today, January 21, 2014 that over the weekend, a person entered a University-owned administrative building in the 500 block of East Boone, and removed personal and University-owned property. The intruder gained access through the main office door; there were no signs of forced entry.  GU Security was notified at the time of discovery. Spokane Police Department responded and obtained a copy of the security video of the incident.    

Here are some important steps you can take to help protect your property:

* Ensure doors and windows are locked. With older doors, ensure the door has completely latched. 

* As reminder valuables should be locked away when an office area is unoccupied.

* Report all crimes immediately to 911.

* Report suspicious persons and activities immediately to 911.

If you encounter a subject in your residence or work space, do not attempt to confront them. Go to a safe place and call 911.

Please notify Campus Security of such incidents as soon as possible so that others in the community can be alerted.

A student reported today between 4:00 PM December 21 and 11:20 AM December 26, person(s) unknown entered a University owned on-campus apartment building in the 400 block of East Sharp.  It appears the suspect(s) pried open the east entry door and proceeded to kick in all of the interior doors to three apartments.  Among the items taken were jewelry, electronics, and clothing.  The apartment building was unoccupied at the time of the burglary.  University maintenance was notified and responded to secure the apartment building.   The student was advised to report the crime to Spokane Police.

On December 23, the owner of a private off-campus house in the 1200 block of N Astor reported to GU Security that sometime on Saturday December 21, unknown person(s) kicked in the back door to the residence.  The owner of the home called one of the GU students renting the house and advised the student of the break-in.  The owner reported he did a walk-through of the house with the student on the phone determining that the only items taken were two sets of car keys to vehicles parked in the driveway. 

The owner of the house secured the residence and called Crime Check to report the burglary. Later this afternoon the owner of the house conducted another check of the residence and discovered one of the vehicles gone.  He called the GU student and confirmed the vehicle as stolen.

* Make sure all of your exterior lights are working.

* Recommend installation of motion activated exterior lights.

* Report suspicious persons and activities immediately to 911.

A Gonzaga student reported today (December 17) at 1:15 pm that on Saturday, December 14, 2013 around 12:30 a.m., while walking with another student near the intersection of Sharp & Hamilton, a man approximately 30 years of age exited a vehicle and struck the student in the face.  According to the student, the man then got back into the vehicle and drove away.  The student was not able to provide a description of the man, nor of the vehicle.  GU Security and Spokane Police were not notified at the time of the incident.

 If you have to walk, do so in groups especially after dark. Try to use well-lit, busy routes. Be aware of your surroundings. Avoid secluded areas such as alleyways. 

• Utilize Saferide if you need a ride back to your residence from an off-campus location: call 509-568-8000.
• Utilize Security escorts to travel across campus: 509-313-2222.
• Report suspicious persons or circumstances immediately to GU Security (509-313-2222) or SPD (911).
• Once you are in safe place, report all crimes immediately to police at 911 and GU Security at 509- 313-2222.

SPOKANE, Wash. – With a wind chill watch in effect and temperatures expected to plummet in the next few days, Spokane Regional Health District (SRHD) and Spokane Department of Emergency Management (DEM) are issuing this health advisory to warn the community about the dangers of exposure to cold conditions. Exposure to cold temperatures can cause serious or life-threatening health problems. Infants and the elderly are particularly at risk, but anyone, including animals, can be affected.

 Vehicles

If you live off-campus, you may want to park your car on campus over holiday breaks. The City of Spokane only allows parking on the street for up to twelve hours at a time.  Additionally, your car may be towed or blocked in by snowplows in the event of a snowstorm.  Consider utilizing the free parking program offered by Campus Public Safety and Security (CPS&S) at the Boone/Van Gorp parking lot.  No permit is required but you must sign up at the CPS&S office located in lower Welch hall.  Parking is limited to the Green Lot and is available on a first-come first-served basis.  This service will run from November 27 to December 1 for Thanksgiving break and December 18 to January 14 for Christmas break.  Campus Security is not responsible for any damage or theft to vehicles if you choose to utilize this program. Remember to lock your vehicle and remove all valuables that may attract unwanted attention.

 Mail & Packages

If you will be gone more than two to three days, make arrangements to have your mail and newspaper deliveries stopped or picked up by a trusted neighbor or friend.

 Whether you live on campus or off, you may rent a mailbox from the Gonzaga Mail Room for $35.00 per school year.  Currently, mailbox rentals are available for $20.00 for the rest of the school year.  With a mailbox through Gonzaga, you can have packages delivered to the secure mail room.

KHQ.COM – On 11/22/13 repeat offender Daniel Sukin was arrested for Possession of a Controlled Substance with Intent to Deliver (Heroin). Spokane Police obtained information that Sukin had several storage units with stolen property inside.

Over the weekend, Spokane Police Patrol Anti-Crime Team (P.A.C.T) executed several search warrants at the storage units believed to house the stolen property.

Tens of thousands of dollars worth of items were recovered from inside the units, including bikes, power tools, painting supplies, and numerous other items (pictured in the link below).

Some of the items inside the storage unit were verified to have been stolen and a new charge for Sukin (Possession of Stolen Property) was forwarded to the Spokane County Prosecutors Office last night.

Spokane Police are asking for citizens to view photos of the stolen property and call Crime Check at 456-2233 to claim items.

A Gonzaga student reported last night, October 27, 2013, that between midnight and 1:00 a.m., while walking with two other students in the alley north of the 400 block of East Mission, they were approached by an unknown male and female. Both were wearing red “hoody” sweat shirts with faces painted to resemble skeletons. The female punched one of the students. The student was then grabbed and thrown to the ground and repeatedly struck. The other students attempted to intervene, but were unable to stop the assault.  During the assault the female demanded money from the student.  A purse was given to the male subject, who rifled through it, then dropped it. Both subjects then fled east through the alley towards Astor Street. Two GU-contracted Spokane Police Department patrol units were on duty in the neighborhood at the time of the incident. They responded and completed a report. The subjects were described of average height and build. The student who was assaulted was treated for her injuries after reporting the assault.

A Gonzaga staff member reported today, October 25, 2013 person(s) unknown attempted to enter an on-campus, University-owned administrative building in the 600 block of East Boone.  The intruder(s) apparently attempted entry through a window, however only the outer windscreen was damaged. The staff member reported entry into the building was not gained. GU Security was not notified at the time of the GU Security was alerted when the attempted entry was discovered.

Since September 21, 2013 students have reported 11 bike thefts. All of which were secured to bike racks at various locations on campus. Of the eleven, two were secured with U-locks while the remaining nine were secured with cable style locks.

Three Vehicle Prowls were reported during the same time period all of which occurred on campus. Community members are reminded to never leave anything out in plain sight.  I.e., backpacks, duffle bags, clothes, laptop cases, and electronic cables.

A student reported today that around 4:05 a.m. today a Caucasian male attempted to force a basement window open and gain entry to an off-campus, non-University-owned residence in the E. 900 block of Desmet Ave. The student shouted at the intruder, startling him and causing him to flee northbound.  The student also reported that the intruder, upon being discovered, stated this was just a prank before he fled.  GU Security and Spokane Police were notified. In his rush to flee, the intruder left behind a knife (used to pry the window screen) and bike.
