Security Alert – Logan Neighborhood Incident

January 28, 2011

A Gonzaga student reported today that at about 2:00 AM this morning (January 28) while walking alone in the 700 block of East Sinto, a light blue older sedan came to a stop near her. There were two males in the vehicle, both of college age. The passenger, wearing a blue sweatshirt and sweats, exited the vehicle and asked if she needed a ride home. When she declined, the subject grabbed her arm in what she believed was an attempt to pull her toward the vehicle. She yelled loudly, wrenched her arm free, and ran to a nearby residence where a friend lived.

After about 20 minutes, she continued walking home alone. She reported that she was not injured. The student did not contact the Spokane Police Department (SPD) or GU Security at the time of the incident.

Gonzaga community members are reminded of the following safety tips:

  • If you have to walk, do so in groups especially after dark. Try to use well-lit, busy routes. Be aware of your surroundings.

  • Utilize Security escorts to travel across campus: 313-2222.
  • Report suspicious persons or circumstances immediately to GU Security (313-2222) or SPD (911).

    Update on fatal shooting
Early Sunday morning, December 12, 2010, around 1:30am, a woman called police from a residence in the 800 block of East Augusta, to report that her daughter was bleeding profusely. The woman reported that her daughter’s boyfriend may have “done this to her”. When officers arrived, they found the female victim inside a bedroom with at least one gunshot wound to the face. Medical personnel responded and transported Samantha Franco to a local hospital where she was pronounced dead.

Franco’s mother gave officers a description of the 24 year old suspect, Tristen Jordan. Patrol officers immediately began searching for Jordan. Meanwhile, there were reports of vehicles being shot at in the parking garage underneath Couglin Hall on the Gonzaga Campus, 800 N. Cincinnati. Officers responded to the garage and found two vehicles that had been shot with a handgun.

Officers located Jordan near the McCarthy Center, 800 N. Cincinnati, bleeding from a gunshot wound to the head. Jordan fled when approached by police but was captured after a short foot pursuit. A handgun, which investigators believe is the murder weapon, was located in a parking lot near 700 N. Hamilton.

Jordan was transported to a local hospital for treatment and has since been flown to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. Jordan remains in police custody and is facing 1st degree Murder charges.

Spokane Police Special Detail Targets Gonzaga-Area Vehicle Prowls

    December 8, 2010
Officers Make Arrest During a Vehicle Prowl Detail
On 12/3/10, officers were assigned to work a special detail in the Gonzaga area due to an increase in vehicle prowling’s.

Corporal Keller was parked in an unmarked vehicle in the area of Cataldo and Columbus where he observed a male, they later identified as 32 year old, Timothy Gunning. He observed Gunning ride onto the sidewalk near a long row of parked vehicles. Gunning stopped and began to look into the passenger side windows of the parked vehicles.

Corporal Keller advised Officers Heuett and Pegram of his observations, who were also working the detail.

Officers Heuett and Pegram observed Gunning stop at a vehicle parked directly in front of them. Officers Heuett and Pegram were also in an unmarked car and in plain clothes. Gunning stopped his bicycle and acted as if he was fixing his collar as he looked into the window. When he saw he was being watched he abruptly left the area.

Officers lost sight of Gunning briefly before they located him again. Gunning had made a complete circle around the parking areas, where vehicle prowlings have been reported. This raised officer’s suspicion.

Gunning was described as wearing a full face motorcycle helmet, puffy winter jacket, with several layers underneath, thick baggy snow pants, gloves and a backpack on his back. Gunning arrived on a mountain bike.

Officer Heuett and Pegram stopped Gunning on Hamilton, near Gonzaga. Gunning was visibly nervous and glancing back and forth as if he was deciding whether to fight or find an escape route.

Officer’s conducted a pat frisk for weapons. Officer Heuett located a pocket knife in Gunnings pocket and when he pulled the knife out two credit cards also fell out. The name on the credit cards was not Gunning. Officer Pegram found out that the name on the cards belonged to a victim of a vehicle prowling just two days prior not far from Gonzaga. The credit cards were confirmed as being stolen.

Gunning was arrested for two counts of Possession of Stolen Property. He was searched incident to arrest and more credit cards were found in his backpack along with personal checks, and a social security card belonging to another possible victim (not confirmed at that time). Officers also located a quantity of shattered vehicle glass and a single Honda key in Gunnings backpack. Those items were seized as evidence.

    Gunning was booked into jail.

    Some Halloween Safe-Partying Tips

    Some Halloween Safe-Partying Tips

If you go to a costume party, go with a group of friends you know and trust.

    • Always carry a photo ID, and make sure your friends carry identification and phone numbers with them in case they become incapacitated for any reason.
    • Consider your costume, and avoid wearing one that inhibits your ability to see and move freely. Use special caution when crossing the street, and be sure motorists see you before you cross.
    • Some people who want to cause harm may take advantage of being unrecognizable in a Halloween costume.  Stay in an environment where you can easily get help or move away from someone who is threatening your safety.  Be aware of your surroundings.
    • If you are intoxicated, your impaired judgment places you at a much greater risk for injury, unwanted sexual contact, or a police citation. Set a drink limit for yourself and stick to it. (Or plan not to drink alcohol at all.)
    • If you accept a beverage from someone, make sure that you know the individual, you have observed the drink being prepared, and you never leave it unattended. Exercise caution in any public setting with any beverage.
    • Make a plan to get home safely. If you have no other safe option, you can utilize Gonzaga Saferide for rides back to your on-campus or near-campus residence.  568-8000. Halloween is one of the busiest nights of the year for cabs, so please be prepared to wait for your ride.

If you plan to host a party, please visit the Gonzaga Off-Campus Living guide at: http://www.gonzaga.edu/student-life/Off-Campus-Living/OffCampusGuide.pdf .  You’ll find some great tips for safely hosting guests and a social gathering on pages 16-19.

Aggravated Assault/Attempted Robbery reported in the Logan Neighborhood

    October 17, 2010

Gonzaga Security received a report at about 3:00 AM this morning (October 17) that a student was being treated at a local hospital for injuries he received when he was assaulted at about 2:00 AM near the 200 block of East Nora.  The student, who also resides off-campus, was apparently visiting a friend who lives in the area when a male subject with his face covered demanded his wallet. The student reported that he gave the subject his wallet, but that at some point the subject cut him on his arm. The student reported that the subject returned his wallet when he found no cash inside, and then fled the area on foot. The student did not contact the Spokane Police Department (SPD) or GU Security at the time of the incident. Two GU-contracted Spokane Police Department patrol units were on duty in the neighborhood at the time of the incident. The student subsequently contacted SPD from the hospital.

The student described the subject as a white male, 35-45 years of age, about 6 feet tall, of heavy build, with long brown hair and a full beard. The subject was wearing dirty pants, dirty heavy leather gloves, and boots.

Gonzaga community members are reminded of the following safety tips:

    • If you have to walk, do so in groups especially after dark. Try to use well-lit, busy routes. Be aware of your surroundings.
