Opening day Arrival Instructions

August 19, 2014

Welcome to Gonzaga! Friday, August 29th 2014 is the first day new students can move in to residence halls.  Below the instructions please note there is a map for you refer to. Two major changes in traffic flow on the university campus will allow easy access for unloading and parking:

–   Cincinnati Street from the Centennial trail to Desmet Avenue shall only be a northbound one-way street;

–  Desmet Avenue from Cincinnati to Hamilton Street shall only be an eastbound one-way street to allow egress for departing vehicles. To access Cincinnati Street, you must turn west onto Spokane Falls Boulevard from Hamilton Street and then turn north onto Cincinnati Street.

In order to reduce the wait time for students to unload their belongings; we recommend that after you have completed unloading your vehicle you park your vehicle in the parking garage located at Desmet and Cincinnati, any Gonzaga-owned parking lot, or street parking; and then finish moving into your respective residence hall.

To ease any confusion on how to arrive to your respective residence hall, please follow these directions:

Coughlin Hall/Catherine-Monica/Madonna:

Turn north onto Cincinnati Street (one street west of Hamilton Street) from Spokane Falls Boulevard and continue north to the Centennial Trail where a uniformed staff member shall direct you to your respective residence hall for parking. Coughlin Hall is the first residence hall on your right, Catherine-Monica is the second on your right, and Madonna is the third on the right.

Twohy Hall:

Twohy Hall is located on the corner of Boone Avenue (one street south of Sharp Avenue) and Cincinnati Street. You may park anywhere possible to unload.

Roncalli/Lincoln/Alliance:

Roncalli and Lincoln are located on the north side of Boone Avenue between Cincinnati and Dakota Street (two streets west of Hamilton Street, six streets from Ruby). Alliance is located across Dakota Street from Lincoln. You may park on the street or in the alley to unload.

Dillon/Goller:

Dillon and Goller Halls are located between Standard (three streets west of Hamilton, and five streets east of Ruby) and Dakota just south of Sharp Avenue. To park and unload, you must either turn south onto Standard or Dakota Street. You must then turn into the alley between the aforementioned streets where parking is provided.

Crimont Hall:

Crimont is located on the west side of Standard Street just north of Sharp Avenue. There is parking in the alley, or you may park on the street.

 Welch Hall:

If you are arriving from Sharp Avenue – turn south onto Dakota Street and continue to Boone Avenue where a uniformed staff member shall direct you to a parking space.

If you are arriving from Hamilton Street – turn west onto Boone Avenue and continue to Dakota where a uniformed staff member shall direct you to a parking space.

Desmet Hall:

Turn south onto Standard from Sharp Avenue and continue south where a uniformed staff member shall direct you to a parking space.

New Student Arrival

August 22, 2013

Friday August 30, 2013 marks the beginning of the new school year with orientation and most of the first year students moving into their assigned residence hall.  We are expecting over 1200 students to descend on campus that day, along with their vehicles, parents, siblings and belongings. For the safety of all persons involved, we are requesting the following:

 –          Please avoid driving in the northeast portion of the campus from 7am-5pm. Traffic flow in that area will be slow and even stopped at several times, especially with the construction of the new University Center.

–          Be aware that some streets and alleys normally used by employees will be closed most of the day.

–          There will be no southbound traffic allowed on Cincinnati from Desmet to Lower Kennedy. At that location, Cincinnati will be temporarily restricted to “one way” northbound only until Madonna and Catherine Monica unloading is completed.

–          If you must get to the Law School parking area that day and are arriving from the north, please drive southbound on Hamilton to westbound Springfield and then onto Cincinnati to reach the parking lot.

–          Pedestrian traffic in all parts of our campus will be quite heavy. Our visitors may be concentrating on other things and not be sufficiently wary of vehicle traffic. Please watch out for them!

–          Overall, parking in all lots and areas of campus will be impacted by this event. The Athletic lots north of the Centennial Trail, and the north College Hall lots have been designated as “long-term parking” for this weekend. To expedite the move-in process, parents and students will be directed to park at these locations after unloading.

Your patience and goodwill are the keys to a successful day as we embrace the spirit of the new school year. On behalf of the entire security team, let us thank you in advance for your consideration and cooperation in making this event work as planned.

Recommendations for Residence Hall Move-In Friday August 24

August 15, 2012

Arrival Recommendations

To expedite the move-in process on campus, Cincinnati Street from Desmet Ave to the Centennial Trail will be restricted to north bound “one-way” traffic only.  To alleviate confusion and/or being “stuck” in traffic, these recommendations were created to assist you during your big day.  It is advisable that you familiarize yourself with our campus and the surrounding neighborhood streets prior to your arrival.

Additionally, be aware that GU has finally broke ground on our much-anticipated multi-tiered parking structure on campus.  The location of the construction site is
Desmet and Cincinnati and takes up an entire city block in size.  When finished, we will truly welcome the addition parking spaces it will provide.  However, please note that this year due to the infant stage of progress or construction, we will not be allowed to utilize any of the property being worked on for parking.  Simply put,
parking for this year’s Opening Day activities will be very, very limited.  Although plans are being reviewed in an attempt to accommodate most move-in day vehicles, please be advised that street parking may be the only space available.

For the below listed Resident Halls, please enter our campus as follows:

DeSmet Hall:

From east or westbound Sharp Ave, turn southbound (towards campus), onto Standard Street.  Proceed to the marked barricade where a uniform Officer will direct you to your destination.

Welch Hall:

From Hamilton:  If southbound from Sharp Ave, turn right onto Boone Ave.  Continue one block and turn left at Cincinnati Street.  If northbound from Interstate 90, turn left onto Boone Ave.   Turn left again (next block), onto Cincinnati Street.  Once on Cincinnati, continue towards campus and stop at the temporary stop sign at Desmet Ave, which will be manned by Security Personnel.  Tell the Officer you need to go to “Welch” and you will be directed to your desired destination.

Southbound Cincinnati from Sharp Ave:  Continue driving towards campus to the temporary stop sign.  Tell the uniformed Officer you need to go to “Welch.” In  addition, they will direct you to your destination.

Madonna/Catherine-Monica:

From Hamilton: If south bound from Sharp Ave, continue past the school all the way to the next tri-light signal.  That will be Spokane Falls Blvd/ Trent Ave.  Turn right and drive one short block to Cincinnati Ave (You’ll see the GU baseball stadium on the corner).  Turn right (north bound), and drive towards campus to the marked barricade which will be manned by uniformed Officers.  Tell the Officers you need to unload at Madonna or Catherine-Monica and they will direct you to your destination.

From Interstate 90:  Take the Hamilton Street off ramp, which ends at Spokane Falls/Trent Ave.  Get into the left turn only lane and turn westbound.  Quickly get into the right lane of Spokane Falls Blvd, as you will be making a right turn at the next street, which is Cincinnati.  Precede north bound to the marked barricade, which will be manned by uniformed Officers.  Tell them Madonna or Catherine-Monica and they will direct you from there.

Coughlin Hall:

From Hamilton south bound or from Interstate 90:  Follow the same directions stated above under Madonna/Catherine-Monica.  When you arrive at the barricade, just tell the Officer your assigned to Coughlin Hall and you will be directed to the appropriate parking/unloading area.

Please note: You will be notified by  Housing of the “official” check-in/move-in time for your particular Resident Hall.  With your help, the move-in staff will attempt to stay on schedule throughout the day.  However, in some cases do to travel distances, we realize families arrive on campus earlier than requested.  Therefore, should you arrive a few minutes before your assigned time; Campus Security will direct you to a “staging area” near your assigned Resident Hall.

If you must get to the Law School parking area that day and are arriving from the north, it is suggested as an alternative, to use southbound Hamilton to westbound Springfield and then onto Cincinnati to reach the parking lot.

Please Note:  To expedite the move-in process on campus, Cincinnati Street from Desmet to Lower Kennedy Road will be restricted to southbound “one-way” traffic only.  To alleviate being “stuck” in traffic from the other dorms, it is advisable for Coughlin residents only, to access the area by utilizing the southern most portion of Cincinnati from Spokane Falls Blvd.  That portion of the road will remain open throughout the day, to normal north and south bound vehicle travel.

Traffic Safety Tips

November 17, 2010

Pedestrian Safety is a responsibility of both the pedestrians, and the drivers, who travel on and near the Gonzaga University Campus. Here are some common sense safety practices we can all follow to keep our community members safe:

Safety tips for PEDESTRIANS:

Be safe and be seen: make yourself visible to drivers

  • Wear bright/light colored clothing and reflective materials.
  • Carry a flashlight when walking at night.
  • Cross in a well-lit area at night.
  • Stand clear of buses, hedges, parked cars or other obstacles before crossing so drivers can see you. Read the rest of this entry »

Spokane Police News Release-Cell phone law

June 9, 2010
Cell Phone & Texting Laws Become a Primary Offense Tomorrow
The Spokane Police Department wants to remind drivers that the laws regarding texting and cell phone use while driving change tomorrow.  As of June 10, 2010, Washington’s new cell phone law is in effect—with strict police enforcement. If police see you holding a phone to your ear or texting while driving, they can pull you over. Tickets are $124 and could be more if your distracted driving causes a collision.

It is important to remember that studies show even using a hands-free device does not reduce the level of distraction you have while talking on your phone.  The best advice is still to pull over to a safe place if you need to talk to someone on your phone.

Go Figure!

January 14, 2010

The City of Spokane is the host for the 2010 US Figure Skating Championships which starts today and will end on January 24th.  There are over 270 competitors in the competition and many more visitors coming to Spokane to watch them.  If you are planning on going down town or will be attending functions off campus and normally call for a cab ride for transportation, plan to have a longer wait period than normal.  Plan ahead for your pick up time and be patient for your ride because there will be more traffic congestion in the area. Remember a few tips on personal safety:

  • If you plan on attending a function downtown or anywhere off campus, go with a group of people.
  • If you are able, leave any valuables at home such as wallets, purses, iPods.  These are easy pickings if left in a booth or on a table at a club or party even if you just get up for a minute to dance, use the restroom, etc.
  • If you are walking, wear appropriate clothing such as light and reflective colors so drivers can see you in dimly lit areas.
  • UTILIZE SAFERIDE!  If you are uncomfortable where you are or fear for your safety with no safe way home, call SafeRide at (509) 568-8000.  Have your Student I.D. on you and receive a free ride back to campus.
  • Look out for each other and use the buddy system.  Be a good bystander and call saferide for a friend or call Security at (509)313-2222 if you are close to campus for an escort…no questions asked.

Our priority here at Gonzaga Security is you….please make yourself a priority as well and make good decisions and look out for each other.

Spokane Police to do Pedestrian Emphasis Patrol

September 15, 2009

Pedestrian Emphasis near Gonzaga on Thursday

The Spokane Police Department’s Traffic Unit has had an increase in the number of complaints of drivers failing to yield in crosswalks.  Thursday, September 17th, we will focus our efforts in the Gonzaga area with an emphasis patrol for pedestrian safety.  The college district near Hamilton and Sharp will be the focus of the emphasis.  Sharp west of Hamilton is a 25 mile per hour zone because of the amount of pedestrians headed to Gonzaga.

Drivers are reminded that not all crosswalks are marked.  In fact, most crosswalks in the city are not.  The law states a driver of an approaching vehicle shall stop and remain stopped to allow a pedestrian or bicycle to cross the roadway within an unmarked or marked crosswalk when the pedestrian or bicycle is upon or within one lane of the half of the roadway upon which the vehicle is traveling or onto which it is turning. For purposes of this law, “half of the roadway” means all traffic lanes carrying traffic in one direction of travel, and includes the entire width of a one-way roadway.

Last year, in Spokane City there were127 crashes reported involving pedestrians, with 101 injuries, making this issue a priority for the Traffic Unit.  Below is a chart that shows how just a slight increase in speed can have devastating consequences.

Pedestrian fatality risk at various striking vehicle speeds:

Vehicle Speed     Fatality Risk

14 mph                5%

21                        10

25                        25

28                        58

30                        75

35                        99

To report areas with repeated violations call the Traffic Hotline (509) 625-4150.
