SPOKANE, Wash. – Gonzaga University’s School of Nursing and Human Physiology, established in July 2013, is already the nation’s 102nd (tie) best nursing school (master’s), according to U.S. News & World Report’s rankings released today. The rankings are in U.S. News’ 2016 edition of the book “Best Graduate Schools.” View the list online.
Programs at the 503 nursing schools with master’s or doctoral programs accredited by either the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education or the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing were surveyed; 273 responded, and 246 were eligible to be included in the rankings of master’s programs.
Factors involved in U.S. News & World Report’s methodology to determine its rankings included: quality assessment; student selectivity and achievement; faculty resources; and research activity.
Brenda Stevenson Marshall, Ph.D., dean of the school, said the rankings recognize its growing national excellence and provides validation for its focus.
“As a school we decided to have a visible and physical presence as a center for health science, health care education and nursing. It is vital that we inspire and prepare our students to become leaders in nursing practice empowered to contribute in positive and meaningful ways to society in local, national and international venues,” Dean Marshall said. “Our nursing faculty, individually and collectively, demonstrate those qualities that make our goal a reality. Most important we wish to be known for exemplary nursing instruction that inculcates the humanistic, ethical and moral values of a Jesuit institution.”
The School of Nursing and Human Physiology (SNHP), Gonzaga’s first new school in nearly 40 years, underscores the University’s commitment to developing the health professions in the Jesuit, Catholic tradition. The school provides students opportunities to contribute in significant ways to the field of health care through education, research collaboration with exemplary faculty and engagement with the greater Spokane community, as well as national and international constituencies.
Nursing and Human Physiology, the two founding departments of the integrated SNHP, are robust programs offering undergraduate and graduate degrees with significant portions of the graduate and doctorate portions delivered online.
Gonzaga’s nursing program offers bachelor, master’s and doctoral degrees. The program focuses on the values of servant leadership, social justice, community and reflective practice. The human physiology program provides students with a foundation for careers in health and allied health fields, research, teaching and private industry. The department of nurse anesthesia offers the Clinical Doctorate in Nurse Anesthesia Practice (DNAP) and welcomes its inaugural class in fall 2015.
