Look out for the WALL!

A great place to not only look for any campus activity going on during the week, but to promote or advertise your activity is the wall. The wall is next to College Hall, besides Desmet, and across from Crosby. The wall is something “hard to miss” while walking on campus. I’ve never really used the wall until Bomb Squad’s Welcome to the Jungle Dance. Advertising on the wall was one of the many way we spread the word about the dance, which was probably one of the most effective way because I know from personal experiences that whenever I walk by the wall, my eyes are glued onto it reading all the events going on that week. The wall is also another way of showing one’s creativity; many ads by clubs are really artistic. Usually the artistic ones are the ones that “attracts” your eyes first.

Seasons Changing

Want to hear about something that completely blows my mind??? SEASONS! It’s crazy how everything changes. I come from a place where there is no snow, and two seasons. Believe me when I say that these two seasons are exactly the same and that the only difference is that one season is wet, and one season is dry; although lately, it hasn’t been raining too much at home. However, in Spokane, you definitely get a taste of all four seasons of the year. Recently, the leaves on the trees have started changing colors and fall has announced its arrival! Spokane is such a beautiful place to live in and being here has taught me so much about change. After living in a place where the weather is consistent year-round, the changing seasons of Spokane remind me of how important it is to change. To become stagnant in life would bring about no creativity and no inspiration; however, change allows for something to become a blank canvas to be painted over to become more diverse and unique. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying that the place that I come from doesn’t change and is terrible because it certainly does change (in its own way) but the changes of Spokane are much more evident. So, as you high school students begin to search for a college, don’t be afraid to venture out and search for a change. It’s totally natural and, in my opinion, healthy to long for something new and exciting in order to learn about another culture and be submersed in different kinds of values. If you ask me, I believe coming to Gonzaga to find that uniqueness was the absolute best decision I could have made. Like the seasons, change is beautiful; it allows for us to become that blank canvas to be painted on with values and morals that will shape us into the people we will become in the future.

Fall Family Weekend and Kraziness in the Kennel

Wow!! Fall family weekend was incredibly busy but so, so, so much fun! It was really nice because my parents AND grandparents came up to visit me up at Gonzaga. It was really cool because they got to see the new house I moved into this year and got to meet the housemates they didn’t already know. Friday night we went to my favorite new Spokane restaurant, Mizuna’s (if you visit GU, this is a must!) with two of my best friends. Then Saturday I was busy all day selling Kennel Club t-shirts while my parents went to Greenbluff (one of the coolest things about Spokane), which is a huge area north of town where there are 40+ farms that sell pumpkins and apples and all types of cool things, as well as pumpkin canons, hay rides, and corn mazes! By far the best part of the weekend was watching the intra-squad basketball scrimmage known as Kraziness in the Kennel! Man oh man does our team look great! The stand out was Freshman Kevin Pangos who scored 16 points in the 15 minute scrimmage! I can’t wait for our first game this Friday! Hello everyone!

My name is Elizabeth and I am currently a Junior here at Gonzaga. I am attempting a triple major in Latin American Studies, Art and Spanish, so if you are interested in any of those majors let me know! Anyway I am from Fairfield, California but I also lived in Arizona for a couple of years. With that said, Spokane was the last place I thought I would end up.

It was not until I came for a college visit that I fell in LOVE with the campus. Unlike many I didn’t get the opportunity to come for GEL weekend, so I pretty much learned about the campus through the campus tour I had during Christmas break, the school website (which I think is AMAZING), the YouTube videos, pictures, and student blogs.  The fact that I got to visit the University helped me a lot with my decision, but don’t let that discourage you because if you are unable to come up for a college visit, you can still learn about the campus through our school website and even get some virtual tours of the campus. Just so you know there are students that I have talked to that said they had never visited the campus until the day they got to move in to their dorms! Crazy right? This just goes to show that even if you don’t get the opportunity to experience the GU community prior to your decision there are still ways to learn more about the campus, so take advantage of all those resources!

Hello There!

Hello there! My name’s Heather, and I’m one of the student bloggers for Gonzaga University.

I’m a freshman from Walla Walla, WA, so I’m pretty familiar with certain aspects of Spokane, such as its *ahem* LOVELY weather and stores that I’ve only heard of. Coming from a small Catholic high school, it feels strange to not know everyone’s name! However, Gonzaga certainly feels like home to me.

I’m planning on double-majoring in English and Music Education, and I’m also planning on acquiring my teacher certification, so I have a lot on my plate! Along with that, I’m also in the Women’s Chorus, La Raza Latina, and RHA (Residence Hall Association). It’s a little difficult to squeeze in practice time for my violin, but time management is everything in college!

I’m hoping that many of you are considering Gonzaga. I love it here! Keep your options and minds open, and make careful decisions! It feels like a long time ago, but I remember being in your shoes just a year ago: hurrying to finish applications for scholarships, racing to finish the Common App, reading up on programs in different schools, visiting different campuses… Just a few words of advice, however.

  • Write everything down, especially deadlines. Trust me, it helps.
  • Don’t leave applications to the last minute. Procrastination is never good…
  • Research research research! I found out about great scholarships after their deadlines had passed…

Once again, I hope you are considering Gonzaga!

A Whole New Year!

This year I’m a sophomore. I’m returning to a place that’s familiar and I’m out of the dorms. But I have to say, looking at the new freshmen here at Gonzaga is reminding me of how great it was to come here for the first time. I came to Gonzaga from a town called Kahului on an island called Maui in the state of Hawaii. Coming here was only the second time I had ever left the islands so it’s safe to say that I was afraid. I didn’t know anyone and I was introduced to an entirely different culture from the culture I grew up with. I was also introduced to different faces that weren’t identical to the beautiful faces at home – not to say that the faces here aren’t beautiful, lol. But, I’m glad I stuck through all the loneliness and found my fit here at Gonzaga. I know it’s only been a couple of weeks, but looking at the freshmen makes me so happy. They are going to find their fit like I did with the Hawaii Club. They are going to find their lifetime friends like I have found with my roommate, “brother,” and “sister” here at Gonzaga. They are going to figure out how to manage their time and how important it is to fit coffee into their daily college schedules. They are going to meet new people and fall in love; just like I did as a freshman! And I can’t wait to be a part of it (well, at least for some of them!) Good luck and Go ZAGS!!!!

An Introduction to Nikky…

Hello everyone! My name is Nikky. I am a freshman and my intended major is Political Science. I am from Spokane, WA; so the move to Gonzaga was not far. I chose to go to Gonzaga because one, my mom wanted me close to home, two, I heard the Law program here was pretty good, and three, I wanted to be surrounded by a close knit community. Even though I am going to college in my hometown, I still feel independent because I live on campus and I only see my family on the weekends. My hobbies are dancing, doing outdoors activities, and playing all kinds of sports.
