Suspicious request to borrow phone reported

A student reported today that last Friday afternoon around 2:30 PM while she was walking on Sharp near the Health Center a black two door car stopped and asked to borrow her phone. There was a blonde white male driving and short dark haired white female in the passenger seat. The man claimed that they had driven up with a church group and had gotten separated from them. He also held up a phone saying that it had died. The student asked him where they were going and he said downtown.  The student was uncomfortable with the situation and didn’t allow the man to borrow her phone. Later,  she heard from another friend that she had lost her phone in a similar situation involving what was likely the same individuals when the man drove off with it.

Due to their growing popularity, cell phones are fast becoming a favorite target of thieves. Campus Security suggests the following safety tips:

  • Always be aware of your surroundings. Avoid becoming distracted by your cell phone conversation when walking on the street.
  • Use your cell phone security lock.
  • Never loan your cell phone to a stranger. In case of an emergency, offer to make the call for them.
  • If your phone is lost or stolen, report the loss immediately to your cell phone service provider and the police.
