At 11:50 AM today a subject entered an apartment at the Kennedy Apartments and took a purse from the common area belonging to one of the residents.  The subject then ran from the building northbound into the neighborhood. The subject is described as a white male about 30 years of age, 6 feet tall, thin build, wearing a dark jacket. Spokane Police and Campus Security are investigating.

Students and staff are reminded:

• Do not leave doors propped and unattended, even for short periods of time.
• Do not allow access to restricted areas unless you are sure the person is authorized to be there.
• Keep room and apartment doors locked.
• Call Campus Security immediately if you see suspicious persons in or around campus buildings.
• If you encounter a subject in your residence, do not attempt to confront them. Go to a safe place and call 911.

A student reported that she saw an individual wearing a hooded sweatshirt looking in her ground floor window at about 10:50 PM last night. Gonzaga Security checked the area but was unable to locate the subject. No other description was available.

As a reminder, please keep all drapes closed at night and especially in ground level residences.

On January 24th at 8:05 PM, a white male subject, working with another subject in an older model dark-colored 4-door sedan, broke into a vehicle in the parking lot of the Sinto Apartments. Prior to breaking into the vehicle, the subject used a flashlight to check the contents of several vehicles in the parking lot. We believe this vehicle was targeted because it had a ipod charger in view in in the console.

A Gonzaga student reported this afternoon that at 2:00 AM this morning (January 16) while walking alone in the 900 block of East Baldwin; he was knocked to the ground and was assaulted by two male subjects. The student reported his wallet and its contents as well his back pack were taken by the subjects.  They then fled on foot. The student contacted the Spokane Police Department (SPD) upon returning to his residence.  One of the subjects was described as a white male in his 20’s, wearing a camouflaged jacket. The only details on the second male the student could provide was that the male was a wearing a beige hoody.

Gonzaga community members are reminded of the following safety tips:

• If you have to walk, do so in groups especially after dark. Try to use well-lit, busy routes. Be aware of your surroundings.
• Utilize Saferide if you need a ride back to your residence from an off-campus location: call 568-8000.
• Utilize Security escorts to travel across campus: 313-2222.
• Report suspicious persons or circumstances immediately to GU Security (313-2222) or SPD (911).
• Once you are in safe place, report all crimes immediately to police at 911 and GU Security at 313-2222.

We don’t believe any students were involved.

We see very little in the way of violent crime on the Gonzaga campus, but it can happen. To help prepare all of our Gonzaga community members for “active shooter” situations – which can happen anywhere – we offer both individualized and on-line training. Gonzaga staff, faculty, and students can visit our “Active Shooter” webpage and view a short video to prepare themselves for these rare, but dangerous, situations. We also ask all staff, faculty, and students to sign up for “ZagAlert” to receive emergency notices during significant events where an on-going threat is identified.

At about 2:45 PM yesterday, a purse was taken from a second floor office at Jepson. The purse was later found in a basement men’s restroom, minus some contents.

The individual in the pictures is a person of interest. If you see him on or near campus, please contact Campus Security immediately at 509-313-2222.

These two individuals removed a folding chair and tent belonging to students from the Coughlin garage today. They were later observed at WSU Riverpoint. If you see them on or near campus, please contact Gonzaga Security at 509-313-2222.

A student reported a gym bag taken from his vehicle while it was parked in the 1300 block of North Addison. There was no sign of forced entry.

November 26

A student reported her silver and orange Fuji mountain bike was taken from a stairwell at Dussault Apartments. The bike had been secured with a U-lock.  

November 23

A student discovered a hydraulic car jack lodged in his bicycle U-lock at Catherine-Monica. The lock was damaged, but still secured the bike.

November 21

A student reported a bag of clothing was taken from her vehicle while parked in the Corkery Apartments parking lot. A window was broken to gain access.

November 11

Campus security contacted an individual acting suspiciously near a Coughlin Hall bike rack. After determining that he was carrying bolt cutters, Spokane Police were contacted and the subject was identified and trespassed from campus.

A student reported his Specialized Rockhopper bike was missing from a railing at Tilford. It had been secured using a cable lock.

November 9

A student reported that someone had entered his off-campus residence in the 1600 block of North Standard sometime during the evening and took three backpacks from near the front door containing climbing gear (shoes, harness, pants, chalk bags) and snow gloves. There was no indication of forced entry.

A student reported that his silver Honda Accord, was missing from the Legacy Hall parking lot.

November 8

A student reported his black Trek mountain bicycle missing from the bike rack in front of Jepson. The bike had been secured with a cable lock.

November 7

A student reported her laptop was taken from a cubicle at Foley Library when she left it unattended.  

November 6

A student reported his bike missing from the Paccar bike rack. It had been secured with a cable lock.

November 4

Campus security officers disarmed and detained a subject who waving a hunting knife in a threatening manner near Cataldo. Spokane Police responded and transported him to jail.

October 31

A student reported her purple Schwinn bike missing from the bike rack at Jepson. It had been secured with a cable lock.  

October 30

A student reported his green Raleigh M-60 mountain bike taken from the porch of his off-campus house in the 700 block of East Nora. It was not locked.

October 25

A student reported her purple Murray mountain bike missing from a railing outside of the dance studio. It had been secured with a cable lock.

This subject is a person of interest in a bike theft last week at Coughlin Hall. It appears the bike was locked to the rack by a front fork, and the subject removed the front tire to free the bike. After loading the bike, the subject left in the vehicle shown in the picture gallery. If you see him or the vehicle on or near campus, please call Campus Security immediately at 509-313-2222.

On November 6, 2012 at 5:00 PM campus security was notified by the Spokane Fire Department that they had extinguished a fire in a dumpster near Marian Hall.  The fire was limited to the dumpster and did not cause any damage. The Fire Department was unable to determine if the fire was accidently or intentionally set. 

Call 911 to report any fires. Please report any suspicious persons or circumstances to campus security at 509-313-2222 immediately.

On October 30th at about 2:00 AM, this subject took a moped from the garage at Coughlin. When contacted by campus security near the 900 block of North Columbus, he abandoned the moped and fled. Prior to taking the moped he was observed on camera “inspecting” bikes on the bike rack at Coughlin. It is believed the subject likely lives somewhere in the neighborhood and may have been involved in earlier neighborhood prowlings .  If you see him on or near campus, please contact Campus Security at 313-2222.

An alert Spokane resident saw a suspicious vehicle this morning in the area of 500 E Mission. The resident saw the red 1997 Subaru circling the block near their home. The resident gave dispatchers the license plate number, and it turned out the Subaru was reported stolen at about 6:30 AM from the NW side of the city.

Spokane police responded to the area rather quickly and did find the car as it pulled up to a convenience store at Ermina and Hamilton. Officer Ryan Snider and Susannah Wilson contacted the driver, 21 year old Cody Wolfley as he attempted to enter the store. As the officers were detaining Wolfley, a second suspect appeared in the Subaru and attempted to back out of the parking lot. When the vehicle backed out, it struck a patrol car, causing no damage. He too was quickly detained in the Subaru. He was identified as 31 year old Ace Harris. Both Wolfly and Harris had outstanding warrants and extensive histories in property crimes. Inside the car officers found numerous shaved keys and items that may have been taken in vehicle prowlings.

Harris and Wolfley were booked into the Spokane County Jail for possession of a stolen vehicle. Spokane Police often get great tips from residents. As in this case, the tip turned into felony property arrests and removed subjects like this off the streets. It is encouraged for citizens to call police or Crime Check when they see activity in their neighborhood that seems odd or unfamiliar.

If you go to a costume party, go with a group of friends you know and trust.

• Always carry a photo ID, and make sure your friends carry identification and phone numbers with them in case they become incapacitated for any reason.
• Consider your costume, and avoid wearing one that inhibits your ability to see and move freely. Use special caution when crossing the street, and be sure motorists see you before you cross.
• Some people who want to cause harm may take advantage of being unrecognizable in a Halloween costume.  Stay in an environment where you can easily get help or move away from someone who is threatening your safety.  Be aware of your surroundings.
• If you are intoxicated, your impaired judgment places you at a much greater risk for injury, unwanted sexual contact, or a police citation. Set a drink limit for yourself and stick to it. (Or plan not to drink alcohol at all.)
• If you accept a beverage from someone, make sure that you know the individual, you have observed the drink being prepared, and you never leave it unattended. Exercise caution in any public setting with any beverage.
• Make a plan to get home safely. If you have no other safe option, you can utilize GSBA Saferide for rides back to your on-campus or near-campus residence.  568-8000. Halloween is one of the busiest nights of the year for cabs, so please be prepared to wait for your ride.

October 20 

A Gonzaga student reported his Schwinn “Cruiser” bike missing from the Kennedy southwest bike rack. The student reported he had not locked the bike to the rack.

 A staff member reported that person(s) unknown had entered his vehicle and removed an IPhone, vehicle registration, insurance card and other misc. paperwork while the vehicle was parked in the McCarthey Center parking lot. There was no sign of forced entry.

 October 13

 A student reported his silver, black and red Giant mountain bike missing from a tree outside Kennedy where it had been secured with a U-lock.

 October 11

 A student reported his blue Fuji bike was taken from a bike rack on the south side of Martin Center. It had been secured with a cable lock.

 October 9 

A student reported both tires removed from his Specialized Hard Rock mountain bike while it was secured with a U-lock at a Kennedy bike rack.
