Gonzaga’s Student Chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) recently held its 2nd annual academic year kickoff BBQ and volleyball tournament. The feedback from last year’s event proved to be strongly enthusiastic and positive, helping to bring the event to the School for a second year.
Spirits were high and the competition was fierce. Faculty and students alike presented their best, showcasing commitment and bravery, as was the case for Dr. Young, who sustained a bloody-lip in the fray. After a disappointing result a year ago, the faculty team reached deep and saw Dean Silliman paired together with the high-flying Dr. Maxwell, go on to grab their team’s MVP award. In the semi-finals, the faculty team fell to the defending champions the class of 2018. In the championship match it was the junior class that tasted victory as they defeated the senior class.
The turnout for the event was remarkable with over 75 students and faculty in attendance. The event encouraged interaction and engagement within the different civil engineering classes, and allowed for students to interact with faculty in a relaxed environment.
Club officers are making a concentrated effort to bring an increase to both club membership and momentum. This year’s highlighted projects include participating in the region conference steel bridge competition as well as to build wheel chair ramps for those in the community who cannot afford one.
