Dear Doctoral students enrolled in Larry Spears’ class,

Larry Spears has had a recurring illness come up and his doctors have disallowed him traveling at this time.

He sends his deepest regard to you, and apologies that he will be unable to make it at this time for the class he had planned to teach next Thursday, for the reception planned for 5pm that day, and for the leadership research symposium he had planned to attend on the weekend.   Thank you for your care and understanding.

Sincerely,

Shann

The conference is also intended to highlight the theory and practice of leadership studies research methodologies currently alive in our programs.

Hi All,
Great news for doctoral community member Lyna Matesi!
See the link below. Also Lyna’s contact info is at the end of the message.
Take care,
Shann
Two faculty members from the UW-Stevens Point School of Business & Economics were honored for their paper at the 49th annual Midwest Business Administration Association (MBAA) International Convention, on Friday, March 1 at the Drake Hotel in Chicago.
C.R. Marshall and Lyna Matesi won the North American Management Society’s Distinguished Paper Award at the convention for their article “Redesigning an Organizational Behavior Class Using the Understanding by Design framework.”
Abstract: If our job as university professors is to guide our students in their learning process, then we must carefully consider what learning we should guide them toward. This paper describes the backwards design process, based on Wigging and McTighe (2006) that the authors used to meld student opinion with their own academic and professional experience to develop learning outcomes for an undergraduate course in Organizational Behavior.
Since its first meeting in 1965, the MBAA International has acted as a coordinating body for autonomous groups in a variety of business-related academic areas. Eleven formal tracks with over 800 active members make up the MBAA International. These organizations represent a variety of disciplines, including accounting, economics, finance, health administration,  information systems, business society and government, international business, legal studies, management, marketing, operations management and entrepreneurship and case studies.
Be well,Lyna Matesi

Due to DPLS events that conflict with Journal Club’s regular meeting times, we have decided to conclude Journal Club until the Summer 2013 term begins. We will notify students of the Summer dates and times. Until then, feel free to browse presentation archives or Facebook or our web page.

Leadership Symposium Important Info

Posted by: Anna | March 8, 2013 | No Comment |

DPLS would like to communicate to and update all students about the forthcoming Leadership Studies Student Research Symposium.

First, the call for proposals has been extended to March 15. If you are interested in presenting, please contact Chris Francovich: francovich@gonzaga.edu. (From this point forward, JoAnn Barbour will be out of town.)

Second, we would like to encourage all students – especially those who are nowhere close to finishing their dissertation – to consider proposing a conceptual presentation. Students who want to discuss a research design are encouraged to apply to this strand. The research is in its inception and one who submits to this strand has an emerging idea, conceptualization, or design to discuss. Perhaps guiding questions or working hypotheses might be explored or discussed. For further details on this and all other types of presentations, click here.

Third, we would like to inform you of an updated Symposium schedule. Please note that the DPLS faculty has agreed to begin classes at 7 p.m. on Friday, March 22:

Friday, March 22
3-5:30 p.m. – Presentations, Tilford 405 & Jepson Hall
5:30-6:30 p.m. – Hors d’oeuvres Reception (5:30-6 p.m.) with Speaker (6-6:30 p.m.), Cataldo Hall
7 p.m. – The DPLS faculty have agreed to begin their classes at this time that evening.

Saturday, March 23
Noon-1 p.m. – Lunch w/ Speaker Larry Spears, Jepson Hall Atrium
1-5 p.m. – Presentations, Jepson Hall

Finally, please register! Registration is free and meals are included.

If you have any further questions, please email Chris Francovich: francovich@gonzaga.edu or visit www.gonzaga.edu/leadershipsymposium.
