Journal Club to Meet on Friday

Posted by: Anna | October 20, 2013 | 1 Comment |

Journal Club is meeting again this Friday, October 25, from 4-5:30 p.m. in Tilford 115. We will meet each Friday afternoon when DPLS classes meet (specific dates are below).

Journal Club is an opportunity for engaging with colleagues in a context of curiosity, uncertainty, and depth. Come explore interesting and unpredictable topics that stretch your horizons! It is a place for anyone in the Gonzaga community to explore ideas and research that interests them. Journal Club effectively invites our community to say, “This is what I am reading, this is what I am interested in, and/or this is what I am thinking.”

All Gonzaga students, faculty, and staff are welcome to attend. Attendees are invited to present a journal article, book chapter, or other scholarly work to colleagues, or just show up and participate in the dialogue. The transdisciplinary nature of this endeavor is meant to offer a rich context for surprise and delight. We explore key themes in leadership studies that focus on problems, questions, and/or speculations about:

  • Influence (e.g., metaphysical, physical/biological, socio-cultural)
  • Power (e.g., historical/traditional, normative, size/scale, role/reputation)
  • Purpose (e.g., meaning, intentions, teleology)

We believe that these themes are broad enough to encourage anyone from any field to participate in our conversation. Everyone who wants a chance to present will be able to do so. At the completion of presentations we engage in conversation and dialogue.

For more info about Journal Club, please click here. Find us on Facebook, too!

In fall 2013, we will meet on Friday afternoons from 4-5:30 p.m. on the following dates: September 6, September 20, October 4, October 18, October 25, November 15, November 22, and December 6. We will meet in Tilford 115, with the exception on November 15 when we will meet in Tilford 117.

Beautiful Work by Our Own Dr. JoAnn Barbour!

Posted by: ferch | September 18, 2013 | No Comment |

Recently Dr. Barbour was asked by Father Frank Case to comment on the Gonzaga Mission. Father Case is the Vice President for Mission here at Gonzaga University.  He then sent out her evocative and profound statement to the entire Gonzaga Community, faculty, staff and others.

Dr. Barbour’s statement on the GU Mission was then picked up by the national Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities (AJCU) because they loved it!  They then posted it on the front page of their website (scroll down to see it on left):

http://ajcunet.edu/

Beautiful work JoAnn, and congratulations!

Here is JoAnn’s exquisite statement on leadership in it’s entirety, based on the first sentence of the Gonzaga Mission:

Exploring the Mission Statement

Gonzaga University is an exemplary learning community that educates students for lives of leadership and service for the common good.”* To lead, one must understand and get to know both the self and other. One develops inherent capabilities and strengths as knowledge of the self grows, and one endeavors to acquire those abilities needed to serve the common good, the other. With self-understanding and other-understanding, a leader learns and practices the tasks, skills, and behaviors needed to serve the other, to help the self and the other flourish. Leadership and service occur within a variety of situations and contexts filled with a variety of meanings. An educated leader recognizes and values the multiplicity of understanding and practice that will ensue as she and he serve the common good.

*From the Gonzaga University Mission Statement, February 2013.

2013/14 Courage and Renewal Academy for Leaders
Starting October 2013 in Chaska, Minnesota

Leadership is not for the faint of heart. How do we develop the courage to lead with authenticity in a world of uncertainty, complexity and competing demands? What practices can help us create trustworthy relationships in communities and organizations? How do we access and strengthen our own resilience? How do we bring our whole selves to our work and life to experience the greatest joy?

Join a 25-person cohort, co-facilitated by Rick Jackson and Laura Kinkead, where we will explore these questions and the application of principles and practices that will deepen your ability to be an effective and authentic leader. This program is designed for leaders from diverse professions-including education, health care, business, public service, nonprofit, philanthropy, and religious life. It is for individuals who want to do personal, reflective, inner work that strengthens the capacity to lead and serve with integrity and courage.

The program is based on the principles and practices of the Courage and Renewal approach, first developed by Parker Palmer.

The Center for Courage and Renewal’s Academy for Leaders. This program begins October 24-27, 2013, in the Minneapolis/St. Paul Area. For more information, click here.

Thanks to Mary Jo, a DPLS student, for passing on this info!
