Friday August 30, 2013 marks the beginning of the new school year with orientation and most of the first year students moving into their assigned residence hall. We are expecting over 1200 students to descend on campus that day, along with their vehicles, parents, siblings and belongings. For the safety of all persons involved, we are requesting the following:
– Please avoid driving in the northeast portion of the campus from 7am-5pm. Traffic flow in that area will be slow and even stopped at several times, especially with the construction of the new University Center.
– Be aware that some streets and alleys normally used by employees will be closed most of the day.
– There will be no southbound traffic allowed on Cincinnati from Desmet to Lower Kennedy. At that location, Cincinnati will be temporarily restricted to “one way” northbound only until Madonna and Catherine Monica unloading is completed.
– If you must get to the Law School parking area that day and are arriving from the north, please drive southbound on Hamilton to westbound Springfield and then onto Cincinnati to reach the parking lot.
– Pedestrian traffic in all parts of our campus will be quite heavy. Our visitors may be concentrating on other things and not be sufficiently wary of vehicle traffic. Please watch out for them!
– Overall, parking in all lots and areas of campus will be impacted by this event. The Athletic lots north of the Centennial Trail, and the north College Hall lots have been designated as “long-term parking” for this weekend. To expedite the move-in process, parents and students will be directed to park at these locations after unloading.
Your patience and goodwill are the keys to a successful day as we embrace the spirit of the new school year. On behalf of the entire security team, let us thank you in advance for your consideration and cooperation in making this event work as planned.

At 2 AM this morning, two vehicles in the Sinto Apartments parking lot were prowled. The suspect was riding a mountain bike and had a backpack. He wore a dark colored hooded jacket. In each case, the suspect first looked into the vehicle using a flashlight, then broke the front passenger window and climbed in through the window to look through the vehicle for valuables. This was much the same MO from the vehicle prowl on January 28th http://blogs.gonzaga.edu/campo/2013/01/28/vehicle-prowl-at-sinto-apartments/
The same subject was later seen in the area at about 4 AM, so he is likely very active in the neighborhood.
Please remember to lock your vehicle and remove or conceal all items that might provide incentive to break in. This includes backpacks, duffle bags, laptop cases, and Ipod cables.

If you go to a costume party, go with a group of friends you know and trust.
- Always carry a photo ID, and make sure your friends carry identification and phone numbers with them in case they become incapacitated for any reason.
- Consider your costume, and avoid wearing one that inhibits your ability to see and move freely. Use special caution when crossing the street, and be sure motorists see you before you cross.
- Some people who want to cause harm may take advantage of being unrecognizable in a Halloween costume. Stay in an environment where you can easily get help or move away from someone who is threatening your safety. Be aware of your surroundings.
- If you are intoxicated, your impaired judgment places you at a much greater risk for injury, unwanted sexual contact, or a police citation. Set a drink limit for yourself and stick to it. (Or plan not to drink alcohol at all.)
- If you accept a beverage from someone, make sure that you know the individual, you have observed the drink being prepared, and you never leave it unattended. Exercise caution in any public setting with any beverage.
- Make a plan to get home safely. If you have no other safe option, you can utilize GSBA Saferide for rides back to your on-campus or near-campus residence. 568-8000. Halloween is one of the busiest nights of the year for cabs, so please be prepared to wait for your ride.

Stabbing Victim Dies of her Injuries; SPD Searching for Suspect in this Random Attack
The woman attacked this morning while walking her dog in North Spokane has died as a result of the stab wounds she sustained. Spokane Police have flooded the area with resources to investigate this incident and ensure public safety. Detectives have detained a man matching the suspect description given by witnesses and are working to determine if this individual is responsible for the attack. The motive of this incident has not been established, however detectives believe this was a random attack.
Details: At 8:11 this morning a 55 year old woman was walking her dog, alone on a walking trail near the area of 1800 E. South Riverton. According to the victim’s description of the incident, a man jumped out of the bushes, stabbed her several times and fled. The victim screamed for help and made her way up the street where a nearby construction worker heard her cries, rushed over, administered as much first aid as he could and called 9-1-1. Medics arrived moments later and transported the victim to an emergency trauma center where she died of her injuries. The victim’s dog was unharmed in the incident.
Immediately after the emergency call, Spokane Police brought in additional resources to the area, including additional officers and a canine unit in an attempt to locate the suspect. Additionally, SPD alerted nearby Cooper Elementary School of the potential danger and worked with school officials to ensure the safety of the children and staff.
Spokane Police Detectives have developed a suspect description based on details obtained from the victim as well as interviews with those living near the area of the attack. The suspected attacker is described as a black male in his early to mid 30s wearing a black hooded sweatshirt. Neighbors say they had seen a man matching this description in the area recently.
