Summer Term Ending

Posted by: JoAnn | July 30, 2013 | No Comment |

Hello All,

As summer term winds down and professors finish efforts to get papers read and grades in, I want to thank all who attended and participated in Summer Session 2013. This was my first term as new department chair. I have appreciated all the help, advice, and support from faculty colleagues, program coordinator, and doctoral students. Thank you! Hopefully you will take some time for “breaks away” before summer ends for you: breaks away from books, from work, from thinking about work, from indoors, from having to meet deadlines, and so on, even for just a tiny bit of time. And hopefully you will take some time for “breaks to” before summer ends: breaks to have some fun, think about nothing in particular, spend time in whatever way you want, not owe anyone a paper with words written on it, not owe any one a reply of any sort, and so on, for as much time as you can capture.

Best of luck to you in the coming months. Safe travels to all going to your homes. Safe travels and much enjoyment to all who figure out a way to take break time to . . . . . .  With Appreciation, JoAnn Danelo Barbour, Associate Professor and Chair, Doctoral Program in Leadership Studies.

Leadership Technology Colloquium

Posted by: JoAnn | July 22, 2013 | No Comment |

On on a recent Sunday, the DPLS held a Leadership and Technology Colloquium in College Hall. For three hours doctoral candidates and interested others from the Gonzaga community discussed various readings, philosophers, and theorists and their connections to technology and leadership, after Professor Chris Francovich began with a reading from one of Hannah Arendt’s major works. The conversation never stopped; the coffee and croissants lasted throughout; and our thinking was stretched through the afternoon. Thank you to Anna Frost for the work she did in making the event successful. Next time we have a leadership colloquium, we hope to see you there. We know many were working on final papers for summer school courses; or are not on campus for courses this summer. Nonetheless, we missed you!! Look forward to seeing you next time.

DPLS Christopher Horsethief delivers a powerful keynote address.

Great work Christopher!

For those who’d like to, click here to witness it:

In the keynote address Dr. Christopher Horsethief, a First Nations educator and researcher, explains how boundary objects such as language and culture can provide structure and stability in the wake of cultural trauma. He discusses recent social network research into Ktunaxa community dynamics in which intense social media interaction demonstrate community resilience. He poses the argument that community members’ use of language and culture allow the Ktunaxa, and all collectively traumatized groups, to pursue collectively intelligent negative entropy.
