#GivingTuesday: A History Lesson

#GivingTuesday is a global movement centered on a special call to action: show the world that we give as well as we get.

Founded in 2012 by the team at Belfer Center for Innovation & Social Impact at the 92nd Street Y (a cultural center in New York City), #GivingTuesday has inspired people to give around the world, resulting in greater donations, volunteer hours and activities that bring about real change in communities. For the past five years, nonprofits, businesses and corporations, families and individuals have collectively come together on #GivingTuesday to help transform the ways people think about, talk about and participate in the season of giving.

Last year, more than 45,000 organizations, Gonzaga University included, came together in this celebration of generosity. More than 700,000 people in over 70 countries helped kick off the charitable season by participating in #GivingTuesday.

You are invited to join Gonzaga University as we participate in #GivingTuesday once again. Here are a few ways you can get involved:

  • Share the message of #GivingTuesday with your networks
  • Volunteer your time with a group that’s meaningful to you
  • Donate goods to those in need
  • Help a neighbor
