“Catholic Identity 50 Years After Vatican II: The Church in the Postmodern World”
Michael P. Horan, Ph.D.
Professor of Theological Studies and Special Assistant to the Provost
Loyola Marymount University
Auditorium of the Jundt Art Museum
Catholic identity is a much-debated topic as Catholics mark the 50th anniversary of the opening of Vatican II. In this session we consider the role of the Catholic University in hosting intelligent conversation about Catholic identity in a postmodern, ideologically divided church and world. Too often the rhetoric of Catholic “identity” is used as code language to construct surface differences/distinctions, without developing an adequate basis for intercultural, inter-religious, and – perhaps most needed in the US Church – intra-ecclesial dialogue. In his remarks, Dr. Horan will offer a modest proposal for revisiting and re-appraising some descriptions of “Catholic” identity as sources to help us to get beyond these divides that define and confine the church in the postmodern world.

“Ever Ancient, Ever New: The Jesuits Respond to Vatican II with Alacrity”
Patrick Howell, S.J.
Rector, Arrupe Jesuit Community
Seattle University
Auditorium of the Jundt Art Museum
The Second Vatican Council mandated all religious orders to return to the pristine charism of their founder and to update their mission in order to meet the challenges of the Modern World. The Jesuits did just this. Their scholarly tradition, their highly adaptable, personal spirituality, and the dynamic charism of Ignatius himself enabled the Jesuit order to once again engage in the practical mysticism envisioned by their founder. This presentation explores the highlights of the Jesuit renewal over the last 50 years, the resistance in some instances especially among the universities, and ultimately their fresh, dynamic vision for the 21st century.
