Yes, Students Can Get a Job on Campus
There are more students working on campus this year than ever before! We have approximately 1,600 students currently working, which includes both federal work study and institutional jobs. Unfortunately, at this time of year there are few new job openings. Students still looking for work on campus, or those who may be waiting until spring semester to seek a job, should be aware that they will have to be assertive, persistent and not picky. Students are advised to speak directly with Robin, the student employment manager, about possible job openings.
For spring semester jobs students are encouraged to begin thinking about where to look before they leave for Christmas break. We also encourage students to network with friends, classmates, faculty and staff about available jobs that might be available. After Christmas break, when students begin their spring semester, there tends to be some job movement due to students either leaving jobs or switching jobs. This can create an opportunity for new jobs to open, so students should be ready to act as these jobs will be snatched up quickly. Students having never worked on campus before must have with them either an original unexpired passport, Social Security card or birth certificate in order to complete their hiring paperwork.
How Work Can Positively Impact Students Going to School
“Students who work 20 hours or less a week on campus report higher levels on all five levels of engagement. These measurements include such things as student-faculty interaction and engaging in active and collaborative learning. Working 20 hours or less off campus strengthens students’ performance on two of the five engagement levels, while students who work 20 hours or more, on campus or off, tend to be more engaged than students who did not work at all. That is likely because these students have developed strong time management skills. Work has a positive effect on things like psychological well-being and leadership…”
