Preventing Mad Hatters at the Dinner Table
Preventing Mad Hatters at the Dinner Table
We all know the scene from the movie: Prim and proper Alice is bombarded by the Mad Hatter at a rather unorthodox tea party. From interrupting, unwelcoming Alice to the table, not listening to one another and to overall poor manners, the Mad Hatter and March Hare are the examples of what to not do at a Tea Party (or dinner table!).
In attempt to prevent students from having similar poor dining habits when dining out with future employers, the Career Center hosts an Etiquette Dinner twice a year, once each semester. This event gives students the chance to hone and refine their dining skills over a four-course meal. We also encourage students to ask questions about dining etiquette, such as:
- How do you eat spaghetti neatly? Or how about a hamburger?
- When do you start dining on a course?
- How important are RSVP’s anyway?
- What conversation topics are off limits?
The event is interactive and fun, and is recommended for all students to participate at least once. From impressing the potential employer or alumni at a networking social, proper dining etiquette is a tool students will use for many years to come.
