An Introduction to Clubs, Organizations, and Involvement at Gonzaga
With August approaching, I am sure many of you are thinking about the huge transition your Zag will be making. You may be happy to know that there are a lot of people thinking of just that and are already making plans to help make your Zag’s transition to college as seamless as possible. There have been many articles written with data to suggest that universities should focus their attention on social activities as soon as students arrive on campus. It is said that the first six weeks will influence the success and adjustment for the duration of the student’s time spent in college. Gonzaga is no exception to this and has created a Programming Board that centers around the activities planned for students. The Programming Board meets twice a month to collaborate and discuss initiatives with the most recent project being a “First Six Weeks” Programming Collaboration. The Programming Board is putting together a schedule of events focusing on weekly themes of community, spirituality, academics, and beauty (The University Theme of the 2010-2011 Academic Year) just to name a few. Each week we will provide a variety of activities and informational sessions from different departments and resources on campus with the goal to help integrate our newest Zags into the Gonzaga community starting with Orientation and transitioning to daily life.
In addition to the “First Six Weeks” Programming Collaboration, Gonzaga has over 80 Clubs and Organizations and thus, there never seems to be a dull moment and something always seems to be going on. We encourage you to encourage your Zag to become involved with one of these clubs or organizations and with so many, there is definitely a group for everyone. Each month, we will be featuring one of the groups in order to give you a glimpse of the people and activities that make this campus uniquely Gonzaga. We have a list of the active clubs on campus at: www.gogsba.com that your Zag may want to get involved with. If they don’t see what they are looking for, they can go through a club recognition process in the fall and apply to start a club that fits their interests.
If you are interested in the activities that are put on each week (including the “First Six Weeks”) log onto: www.gonzaga.edu/thisweek once the school year begins for a calendar of on campus events you can encourage your Zag to get involved with. The calendar is updated weekly (every Monday morning) and is posted around campus in print form.
