Wellness for Life

Karen Contardo, Student Wellness Resource Center Director

For many college students, the university can be a confusing and exhilarating experience.  When students are reluctant to ask questions, they can come to the Student Wellness Resource Center (SWRC) and ask a peer or a staff member to help them find the resources they need. We wouldn’t want SWRC to be the university’s best kept secret.

Within the first month, as students come to campus it is a time of transition, fun and often stress.  Our goal is to support and promote the health and well-being of students because helping students find a balanced approach to living is the best way to be successful here on campus and in life.  If students are looking for study and sleep tips, having roommate problems or wondering how to help a friend, we welcome students to stop by and we will help them.  We involve students to care for and act as mentors in service to one another and those students provide fun and interesting programs to help students develop a healthy lifestyle.  The ultimate study break is one of our spa nights, a favorite program prior to finals.  If students need to learn about something which many students would find very interesting and helpful then we respond to those needs.  Through activities or presentations, students are engaged and consider things they may not have reflected on before.

Last year SWRC reached over 3,000 students with a series of wellness programs and provided peer to peer assistance and educational programs for students around alcohol, other drugs, and violence (AODV) prevention, including our most recent Green Dot initiative where everyone can be involved in building a safer community.  With Green Dot as with many programs, students feel empowered to make a difference in their own community and feel better for doing so.

If your student is not sure where to go, this is a good place to come.  We will listen, assist students and get them to the next level of care as needed.  We also have a bike pump, so if they have a flat tire, we are there for them.  We are located in a house on campus at N 1111 Cincinnati or call 509-313-5923.
