Reforest Spokane
If you are going to be in Spokane for Fall Family Weekend, Zag Dining would like to invite you to participate in “Reforest Spokane Day” on Saturday October 22nd. The Spokane Lands Council, which won a grant from Tom’s of Maine and hosts “Reforest Spokane” each fall, aims to plant a total of 5,000 trees in seven Spokane locations. Zag Dining has partnered with the Lands Council to provide more than four-dozen Gonzaga students an opportunity to give back to their community and environment. Zag Dining will provide equipment and transportation to and from Liberty Park to assist in planting trees from 9-11 a.m.
Then, at noon, students will plant a more mature tree at Finch Arboretum to honor the legendary leader, Wangari Muta Maathai. Maathai, the 71-year-old Nobel Peace Prize Laureate and founder of the Green Belt Movement, had been slated to deliver Gonzaga’s Presidential Speaker Series lecture October 6th. The Gonzaga community was saddened when she lost her fight with cancer on September 25th. Inspired by her vision, the students will partner with the Lands Council to plant trees in Maathai’s honor. Zag Dining will provide transportation and equipment from Liberty Park and Gonzaga to Finch Arboretum for the dedication.
If you or your student is interested in participating in this great community event, please contact student Parker Townley at ptownley@zagmail.gonzaga.edu. A bus to Liberty Park will leave Gonzaga at 8:30 a.m. on October 22nd. For more information, please contact Sarah.Clifford@sodexo.com.
