Five Ways to be Active Every Day
By: Lavina Entel, Health Center
Spring is in the air and summer just around the corner—what a great time to shake off the winter doldrums and add some activity to our schedules!
- Do it your way. Thank about what you like to do.
- Find things you enjoy—walk, dance, hike, swim
- Avoid getting bored—choose 2 or 3 things to do every week.
- What’s your style—do you like being active with a group/partner or alone?
- Don’t try to change all at once—start small
- Be patient with yourself—it takes time
- Fit it in. Add a little activity at a time.
- Start with 10 minutes a day—walk around the block or take a short bike ride
- Add more each day—Go at your own pace
- Aim for 30 minutes a day to stay healthy
- Aim for 60 minutes a day to lose weight
- Add it in. Find ways to make things you already do more active.
- Park farther away and walk
- Bike to places you usually drive
- Take the stairs
- Stretch or jog in place while you watch TV
- Pick up the pace! Walk faster wherever you go
- Make it fun. Choose active things you like to do.
- Join a sports group—softball, bowling, tennis
- Learn a new dance—sign up for classes
- Walk your dog; you’ll be reminded every day!
- Swim laps at the pool
- Do it with others. Being active is a great way to spend time with family and friends.
- Sign up for a karate class with a friend
- Get a group together to play volleyball
- Take the whole family on a hike
- Go dancing with a friend or family member
- Set up a neighborhood soccer game.
It’s easy to stay fit when being active means having fun!
