Student Involvement
By: David Garcia, Unity Multicultural Education Center
Families: thank you for sharing your student with the Gonzaga University community! Your student has officially begun their journey of self-exploration. A fundamental part of this exploration can be found in the University Mission Statement, “The Gonzaga experience fosters a mature commitment to dignity of the human person, social justice, diversity, intercultural competence, global engagement, solidarity with the poor and vulnerable, and care for the planet.”
In alignment with Gonzaga’s faith-inspired commitment to diversity, the Unity Multicultural Education Center, also referred to as UMEC, provides educational opportunities that cultivate mindfulness, intercultural development and support the benefits of a pluralistic and inclusive environment. Here are a few ways you can encourage your student to get involved:
- Submit a dish to Iron Chef in January – The Cultural Gonzaga Cooking Battle (feel free to share a family recipe)
- Go on the cultural immersion trip in Chicago during spring break – The Chi-Urban Excursion
- Submit a Diversity Monologue in March
- Participate in a Crafting Unity Event
- Have a mocktail (non-alcoholic beverage) at a Mocktail Movie Night
- Attend a Study Break to relax and meet new people
- Join in solidarity during the International Day of Tolerance in November
- Attend a Real Talk Event – a panel of student sharing about their experiences at Gonzaga University
- Visit UMEC – where students walk in and build community (located at the corner of Boone and Cincinnati)
