But What Happens When the Holidays are Over? Help us?
Every year, an outpouring of care and concern for the homeless begins around Thanksgiving and lasts through the New Years’ holidays. But what happens when the holidays are over? For many shelters, the holiday season is the harvest, clothing and food is aplenty, and so the rationing begins. The donations made during that 6 week window must be stretched through the bitter cold January and February months. Recognizing this need, three groups of students, the Knights and Setons, Kennel Club, and Homeless Outreach, have come together in the spirit of Gonzaga Day, to organize a winter wear drive. With the support of the Center for Community Action and Service Learning (CCASL), items collected will be handed out at the annual Homeless Connect on Tuesday, January 27th. The Connect is a gathering of local nonprofits that centralizes access to services for homeless and impoverished individuals for one day at the Salvation Army. These students are asking friends, family, and the Spokane community for help! The greatest needs are coats, hats, and gloves – if you have gently worn (or new) items that you would like to donate, please drop them off at the Crosby Student Center on Gonzaga’s Campus Monday January 19th through Friday, January 23rd during normal building hours (7:30am – Midnight). If you have any questions, please direct them to Jeb Berg at 509.313.6937 or bergj@gonzaga.edu.
