Get Involved in UMEC Events
By: David Garcia, UMEC
Thank you for sharing your student with the Gonzaga University community! Your student has officially begun their journey of self-exploration. A fundamental part of this exploration can be found in the University Mission Statement, “The Gonzaga experience fosters a mature commitment to dignity of the human person, social justice, diversity, intercultural competence, global engagement, solidarity with the poor and vulnerable, and care for the planet.”
In alignment with Gonzaga’s faith-inspired commitment to diversity, the Unity Multicultural Education Center, also referred to as UMEC, provides educational opportunities that cultivate mindfulness, intercultural development and support the benefits of a pluralistic and inclusive environment.
Here are a few ways you can encourage your student to get involved:
- Submit a Diversity Monologue in March
- Participate in a Crafting Unity Event
- Have a mocktail (non-alcoholic beverage) at a Mocktail Movie Night
- Attend a Study Break to relax and meet new people
- Join in solidarity during the International Day of Tolerance in November
- Attend a Real Talk Event – A panel of students sharing about their experiences at Gonzaga University
- Submit a dish to Iron Chef in January – The Cultural Gonzaga Cooking Battle (feel free to share a family recipe)
- Go on the cultural immersion trip in Chicago during spring break – The Chi-Urban Excursion
- Visit the Unity Multicultural Education Center – Where you walk in and build community (located at the corner of Boone and Cincinnati)

We thank you for your support and look forward to getting to know your student. Have a blissful and blessed day.
