Announcing “College of Arts & Sciences Expo: New Initiatives” for Fall Family Weekend
By: Tony Payne
New and exciting things are happening in Gonzaga’s largest school, and they’ll all be on display during Fall Family Weekend at the College of Arts & Sciences Expo: New Initiatives!
The College of Arts & Sciences, in line with its mission to transform our students and communities, is launching a slate of new centers and initiatives that highlight the great work being done by our undergraduates and faculty. Students, families, and friends of the University are invited to attend the events.
The Expo takes place Saturday, October 8th across Gonzaga’s campus.
Begin the day with the Coughlin Chair Installation & Conversation (8:45-10:00am in Hemmingson 314). After a reception with morning refreshments, new Coughlin Chair in Philosophy Michael Tkacz and an undergraduate discuss the philosopher’s journey.
Next, the Digital Humanities Initiative Faculty Panel (10:00-10:45am) in Hemmingson Auditorium) celebrates the launch of this new initiative and allows faculty at the forefront of Digital Humanities discuss their work in this emerging field and how it enriches student learning.
The Humanities should engage and benefit the public! The Center for Public Humanities Veterans Panel (11:00am-12:00pm in Hemmingson Auditorium) presents Washington State Poet Laureate and GU English professor Tod Marshall and a panel of College faculty engaged in research on the lives of veterans.
During the Digital Humanities Initiative Student Symposium (1:00-2:00pm in Hemmingson 314), students engaged in the Digital Humanities present an astounding range of recent work and discuss how participating in this new field has impacted their education and future.
The College is extremely proud of the broad and deep research our undergraduates do, and we are launching the Center for Undergraduate Research and Creative Inquiry to bring all their work to even greater prominence. Come to the Center for Undergraduate Research Poster and Presentation Session (1:00-2:30pm in Hughes Hall) as students from across the disciplines take over Hughes to share their research.
At the Kreielsheimer Professor Installation & Open Studio (2:00-3:00pm in Jundt 101), we will celebrate artist and professor Mary Farrell’s installation in this endowed chair. Join her in her studio as she showcases her craft as printmaker and educator.
Stop in at Foley Library any time Saturday for Digital Humanities Exhibits from the Jesuit Archives to experience the culmination of two remarkable, hands-on projects researched, digitized, and curated by GU undergrads. See never-before-seen photos from early 20th-Century Jesuit missionaries to the King Island community of Alaska and witness the impact of Jesuit education through a web of correspondence from WWII soldiers around the globe to their beloved Fr. Egan S.J. in Yakima, WA.
2016 is sure to be a historic year for the College of Arts & Sciences, and Fall Family Weekend is where it begins. We hope to see you there.
