Important Information About Pets at Orientation Weekend
Saying goodbye to a loved one that is moving away from home, likely for the first time ever, can be emotional and challenging. As students move away from home, they are saying goodbye to familiar routines, family members, friends and, often, the family pet. While you might be tempted to bring Fido with you to campus, to allow your student a few more hours with their favorite furry companion, we strongly advise against this for several reasons:
The last weekend of August in Spokane is typically very hot, with temps in the 80s and 90s.
Even when your car is parked in the shade, the temperature inside your car is unsafe for pets. In fact, it is a violation of Washington State law to leave your pet unattended or confined in a vehicle, if the pet could be exposed to excessive heat.
You and your student will be so busy during orientation and move-in weekend, that breaks to walk, water or feed your pet will be difficult to come by!
We know that your pet is the most friendly, lovable companion on the planet, however, not everyone is accustomed to life with an animal. For the comfort and enjoyment of all on campus, please plan to make other arrangements for your pet during orientation weekend.
Encourage your student to spend some extra time with Fido this summer and get in all of the walks, belly rubs and love and affection they can, all in the comfort of your own home and familiar surroundings.
*Service and therapy animals are welcome during Orientation weekend.
