Ways for Your Zag to get Involved in the Global Community at Gonzaga
By: Katie Nollenberger, Center for Global Engagement
Whether your Zag has just returned from studying abroad or they would just like to learn more about our global community at Gonzaga, there are some great ways for them to engage with other Zags through the Center for Global Engagement (CGE). Below are some of the easiest ways for your Zag to get involved:
Join CGE activities: From hiking to Halloween costume shopping, CGE offers activities for GU international students and domestic students to have fun and explore Spokane together. To learn more, visit our Facebook page here.
Join Global Conversations: Is your Zag interested in meeting people from other countries? They can join Global Conversations to meet and chat with students who are studying at Gonzaga in the intensive academic English language program. Groups meet at different times and days, so please have your Zag contact us at nollenberger@gonzaga.edu for more information.
Take the TESOL certificate course through the School of Education. Completing MTSL 401/501 Theory and Practice of Language Teaching will earn your Zag a stand-alone TESOL Certificate that can help them to find work teaching English as Second Language (ESL) either abroad or here in the States. It also strengthens Peace Corps/Fulbright/JET applications and teaching positions where they will be working with non-native English speakers. This 3-credit class is offered in the fall, spring, and summer. To learn more, contact Gale Snyder (snyderg@gonzaga.edu).
Have your Zag submit their study abroad/travel photos. CGE’s annual World View photo contest is taking submissions until October 30. This is a great way for your Zag to share their experiences abroad with the GU community. Submission and contest rules can be found here.
Attend a presentation during International Education Week at GU (November 13- 17). Your Zag can attend presentations from GU faculty, students, and staff on a range of topics from travel writing or photography, to teaching English abroad, to studying abroad in Florence. Information and details will be posted in Morning Mail and the CGE Facebook page.
Come see us at CGE. If your Zag has questions about wanting to get involved in our global community or even traveling abroad after they graduate, send them our way! We are located on the first floor of Hemmingson.
