Gonzaga is known for its established, rigorous, and intensive programs and the English Language Center at GU is no different. Established 40 years ago, the ELC has had more than 8,500 students from over 70 different countries come to study English. The program offers five different levels of academic English that span from emerging learners to Global Bridge, which offers supported classes linked to undergraduate courses such as philosophy and multilingual student writing.

Abdullah Alanazi, a senior international student from Saudi Arabia majoring in accounting, describes his experience studying in the ELC:

“My experience in the ESL Program at Gonzaga was not only focused on learning the language, it was a melting pot of mixed cultures, beliefs, backgrounds, and countries. The program taught me how to interact with people from around the world with respect and open-mindedness. Not only that, but I also had the opportunity to intuitively understand the American culture and be prepared to experience it outside the classroom.”

The richness of diversity of languages, cultures, and experiences that the students in the ELC bring to campus is immeasurable. If your student would like to learn how to become more involved with the ELC, please have them connect with Katie Nollenberger (nollenberger@gonzaga.edu) in the Center for Global Engagement. Similarly, if you know of a student who would be interested in taking English languages courses, we would love to welcome them to the #ZagFam! Inquiries about ESL courses can be sent to Stashia Kaiel (kaiel@gonzaga.edu) and further information can be found on our website: https://www.gonzaga.edu/academics/global-engagement/international-students/english-language-students
