Student with laptopGonzaga Information Technology Services (ITS) is dedicated to delivering high-quality technology to our faculty, staff, and students.   There are many options in the realm of technology, and ITS would like to take this opportunity to inform you how to prepare your student for technology on campus best. Below are a few topics to be aware of before arriving on campus:

TV Requirements: Only certain televisions are compatible with the cable services in residence halls. We recommend bringing a major brand such as LG, Samsung, Sony, Toshiba or Visio, 2007 or newer. As streaming TV has become more popular, please keep in mind the following guideline:

–    Devices must have 802.1x authentication with WPA2/AES encryption

–    Supported devices include: Apple TV, Amazon TV, Roku 2 and 3

–    Devices not supported include: Chromecast, Roku Streaming Stick, Roku 1, and Amazon Fire TV Stick

Printers: Personal wireless printers are very common but are not compatible with our wireless network.  ITS recommends using the printing services located in the Foley Library, as well as seven other academic buildings across campus.

Landline Phones: Landline phones are available in common areas of residence halls. If you would like a telephone installed in your dorm room, please submit a request by emailing techsupport@gonzaga.edu.

Microsoft Office: All active students can download a copy of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) to use while they are a student at the university. The free copy can be download from the settings menu of Zagmail.

Once you are on campus, please stop by the Next Gen Tech Bar in Hemmingson so ITS can help you with any other new fun and exciting technologies on campus. If you have any questions regarding campus technology before you arrive, please feel free to contact our IT Support Center at (509) 313-5550 or email techsupport@gonzaga.edu

  1. Hello Chris,

Thanks for your question. As long as the content is coming from a WiFi enabled app, program, or website, like DirecTV Now, Netflix, Hulu, etc., it will not be a problem. An issue only occurs when someone tries to use a physically plugged-in HDMI dongle like chrome-cast, early generation Roku sticks, and Amazon fire TV devices, in conjunction with their television, as the campus is only compatible with Apple TV, Amazon TV, and Roku versions 2 & 3. I know it can all be confusing, but as long as your daughter is streaming content on her computer, there shouldn’t be a problem.

    Thanks for reading!

Question. If we have DirecTV Now streaming service, will my daughter be able to use her computer on campus to watch it? Or does the content HAVE to come from Amazon TV? Is this all about the content provider?

    Thanks,
    Chris
